Dry belts

Unread post by caeclyd »

My xantia alternator and air con belts make quite a din. I have tried some drive belt conditioning spray (as used on compressor vee belts) and it does not make a difference. I have also tried talc as suggested by a mechanic. This works for about 3 days then the noise starts against is not a bearing fault.
Is there a way of keeping the belts quiet without having to change them ?

If you have replaced the belt and the noise still continues then its more than likely due to a worn out bottom pulley.

these multy grove belts have to be adjusted very tight,if they squeele usuly they need a bit more tightening, they certainly need to be a lot tighter than Vbelts ever did

If you are sure all is in order, take the belt off, and turn it over.

citronut,
So the old "twist the belt through 90 deg on its longest run" test does not apply?
I'm always scared of ruining alternator or pump bearings. Mine twitters at start-up and has only 3K on it.

thats right even thogh its not good practice to over tighten belts,as it was allways said you would over load bearings in what ever the belt is driving,V belts definatly have more grip than these modern multy groove thingys,as a result you have to adjust them an awful lot more than you would think

Thanks for the advice.
I have been away over the weekend and this is my first chance for a reply.
I had better take them off and check for bearing noises.
