In the attic for totally unrelated reasons this afternoon I came across my very first SLR camera, acquired very second-hand in 1976...

Completely forgot I still had it...



It's not in full working order but that's not surprising as it's not been used since the early 80s and has lived in a succession of attics since...

It's compete with a 'Leningrad 4' exposure meter and a Hoya telephoto lens...

The camera badly needs a service as not all shutter speeds work. It looks retrievable though...

I also discovered my old Paterson developing tank...

That camera has to be well over 50 years old now...

I've got a camera that's one or maybe two generations newer than yours there.

I believe this was one of the last before they switched away from the unusual (but ergonomically brilliant in my opinion) shutter release location.

This was the result of the first time I ventured upstairs at ImageX. I do need to look out for another lens for this one though as I've only got a 50mm one for it at the moment, so I tend to end up just defaulting to the OM-10 or T-3 as I'm used to those cameras. I really need to make a point of actually using it more.

That developing tank is a fair chunk of all you really need to give C-41 processing a try. Changing bag and a temperature controlled water bath and you're there I think.

I know you don't generally do YouTube, but this is a pretty informal run through that someone I follow did of the process of developing C-41 at home.



This is the one I saw and went "Huh, that's waaaaaaaay simpler than I expected!"

I used to process B&W film and Ektachrome in Patterson tanks. E-2 then E-4 process.
I was doing it professionally when E-6 was introduced and was using Agfachrome by then.
But I was leaving and they wanted a new processor but it was hard to find one big enough and suitable for Agfachrome, went all over looking for one, mainly in Germany.
Ended up buying a Wainco machine from St. Neots. Got a ride in the MDs Triumph Stag.
I brought a lorry from Sweden, they built the machine into the back of it overnight and I drove it back to Sweden the following day.
Using that was a bit different to a Patterson tank. Thirty feet long and nine feet high.

I remember, all those 50 years ago, lusting after a Super TL2 Zel!

All is currently on hold as I'm very unwell and in enforced rest mode - by order

Yesterday I was forced to abandon a planned trip to see Alasdair 20 miles into the journey when I felt it was too dangerous to continue, having experienced a bizarre sense of not knowing quite where I was - on a road I've driven along countless thousands of times these past 50 years. Scary and worrying in the extreme.

I'm not driving anywhere now until my brain-fog and disorientation resolves. I really don't feel safe or in control. It feels like I'm drunk.

Today my carer-in-cheif, after doing some essential shopping for me, thought a short walk to a nearly playpark with a a lively two year old would do us both good. Who was I to argue On balance, I think it did...

I've looked into the C-41 process Zel and I'm game to give it a go - after I've had a bit of practice at black and white first I think I have a fair grasp of the theory.

What's needed is a good scanner to turn the resultant negs into jpegs! I see there's clever boxes of tricks available that use a smartphone for this task.

Nothing will be progressed until I'm fully fit again.

Whatever has slain me is likely to have been given to me by my playpark companion last week...

I have such an item which you are welcome to borrow for initial trials Jim. This is an example of its product scanned from a 40+ year old negative SWMBO brought home from New Zealand!

Wondering about your bit on running shoes.
A neighbour couple are our local posties, he has been for years and she for the past couple of years.
I was talking to them recently and she said she likes the job and being out in the open but has arthritis in her feet.
I wondered if you knew of any any shoes that you could recommend that would be suitable for her.

I know one person with an arthritic ankle Steve and he has a pair of Brooks. When I asked which ones he was unsure. Next time we are in touch I'll ask. Essentially, if she she goes to her local running shop they'll be able to advise her if they are anything like my local. I'm sure there she'll find some satisfaction

My health remains very poor and I'm under struct instructions to rest and take extreme care of myself until fully recovered. So, all plans (and everything really) currently on hold
