I think they're developing a water pump that can be fitted in place of the gearbox on that engine. It'll be able to pump out the floodwaters in a highly efficient way

This sounds quite negative.

A really quite long podcast here but Imogen is worth watching, beauty and brains, and so much more brains from the interviewee.

Re: Electric Vehicles & Infrastructure - Positive & Negative
There are already some solutions to get around that (there are companies starting up that will provide mobile recharging where they come to you, for example) but I agree that alone won't solve it.GiveMeABreak wrote: 19 Sep 2024, 10:16 but it's all the surrounding issues like what about people in flats / high rise blocks - how are they going to charge their vehicles?
What really needs to happen here is that landlords etc. will have to be incentivised/required to provide them or to permit third-parties to provide them - similar to how it was done for cable/Sky TV/Broadband etc (latest update being the Telecommunications Infrastructure (Leasehold Property) Act 2021). I suspect that will happen.
Other tech such as fast change-out battery swaps will no doubt also be provided within that time.
But the key point here is that it doesn't need to happen in 5 years time. There's too many unsolved issues that need addressing and that is never going to happen in 5 years time.
Hybrids will still be sold in 5 years time (for another 5 years, until 2035) and then there is a very healthy used (and nearly new) pure-ICE and hyrbid car market that will continue to exist for a good while after.
Also, even when the full ban is reached, the law does not require cars to be 'an EV', it just requires them to be 'zero emission'. There are other ways to achieve that (e.g. hydrogen fuel cell - which no doubt will also provoke scorn as to whether that's achievable in the timescale - but I just present it as one example).
The point is that an arbitrary deadline is required in law - that is the ONLY way to force Auto manufacturers, fuel companies, councils, landlords and property owners etc. to make the change - otherwise they won't invest and will just keep flogging the same old tech, to the detrminent of the planet (and by extension, us!).
People made the same kind of 'disaster/unachievable' predictions about things like banning incandescent light bulbs, leaded fuel etc. but we all got round that just fine. Engineers will solve the problem, companies and public bodies will adapt, so that it isn't a real problem for consumers. The world will move on.

Re: Electric Vehicles & Infrastructure - Positive & Negative
Equally you don't have to go far to prove that automakers have been deliberately stifling production to limit sales and create the appearance of 'low demand' (because it means they don't have to invest to make the change quickly).bobins wrote: 19 Sep 2024, 10:31 You don't have to go far to find stories of unsold EVs stacking up and not selling.
The waiting list for some EV's is huge - try buying an EV Transit for example. Due to launch in 2022, production started in Autumn 2023... The waiting list is over a year and growing (I know people on it)!

I was very pleased about this one - both that it happened and the way it was reported.myglaren wrote: 17 Jan 2025, 17:49 This sounds quite negative.

That vehicle is downright dangerous to pedestrians (why it can't be sold in UK/EU) and the owner was breaking the law.

From that video Gibbo, he said the Tesla emissions were 90% better than petrol and 70% better than diesel. That suggests that diesel is better than petrol? Hmmm.........

Yes Mick I wondered about that but maybe he meant the over all problems from the building and running not just the running.
