Berlingo A/C not working

Unread post by KeithDM »

Hello everyone, I am new to this site as it is my first time owning a great French vehicle. I have a 2002 Berlingo. I recently started having trouble with my Air conditioning. The compressor does not kick in when I push the button on the dash. I had an electrician look at it and he said the report suggested fan modules. Does anyone have any ideas on what this could mean and what action I should take. All help appreciated.

It would be easier to purchase a new unit & fit it rather than trying to guess why it dont work , the clutch can fail just due to age 22 yrs old is .. old. & if its dusty conditions too , that wont help.
Husky. :? Thinking outside of the box is better than sitting in a dark one.

If I put 12v directly to the compressor it works perfectly so the problem is electrical in between the switches and compressor.

It is likely that the engine ECU is inhibiting the compressor clutch. We really need to know exactly what the error code(s) is.

One repair shop I took it to did a DTC and it came up as code 0602, communication fault with control panel. I guess that could be the A/C button or the fan control speed switch from what I have been trying to find out.

No disrespect, but is it "fan module" or control panel coms fault? Either could do it.
Ok, if you actually have a code and it says coms fault, I would go with that.
The way the A/C system works is this: The A/C control panel "asks" the BSI (the fuse box in the glove box) to run the compressor at a particular rate (on to off cycle). The BSI then "asks" the engine ECU to turn the compressor on and off. The communication lines the ECUs (Electronic Control Unit) "talk" over are called BUSSES.
The engine ECU may have it's own problems to deal with and some of those problems may stop it from running the A/C compressor! Like a problem with the radiator fan(s)!
Lets just stick with the coms problem for the moment.
So your coms fault involves the BSI not being able to talk to the A/C control panel.
Could be blown fuse (to the A/C panel), broken wire, bad connector contact and so on. Without a circuit diagram it's a bit difficult.
Check your owners manual to see if there is a fuse for the A/C panel. Without a circuit diagram and test equipment the only thing I can suggest, is to replace the panel.
You gave me the impression that the interior fan is not working. Is that true? I think that the fan should run independent of the coms error. So I would lean more towards a power supply problem I.E. fuse or damaged wire in that case.

Sorry for the delay. The in-car fans work perfectly. If I wire the compressor direct it kicks in and works fine so it is a communication between the control panel and compressor I think. I can hear a solenoid click sometimes (not always) when I push the A/C button. Not sure if that could be faulty.

When you apply 12V to the compressor does the A/C actually get cold?
