Re: Computer operating systems
Viscalc and Lotus 1-2-3 have come to mind?

Re: Computer operating systems
A bit of research has turned up Lanpar and Multiplan as options too?

Never heard of those last two.
As I get older I think a lot about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.

Re: Computer operating systems
No neither had I Paul, I found them on a computer history site. No idea who produced them as I didn't read much more.

Re: Computer operating systems
OK, so I've downloaded the official 'media installation tool'. It is only 10mb.
Do I now
1 - Put a usb key in my 'puter and click on the file to create a bootable usb key.
2 - Once done, remove exiting hard drives, connect new one then reboot to usb and then foolow your instructions Jim?
Edit, I need to download the win11 iso as well or does the creation tool do it?
See....I am an idiot

Re: Computer operating systems
Well, fell over at the first hurdle. Media Creation Tool was unable to run on this computer........
Next option I guess is to download the iso file and stick that on the usb key?

Re: Computer operating systems
The media creation tool should download the ISO Pete..
This is the place to go... https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/softwar ... /windows11
Download the 'Create Windows 10 Installation Media' and run the downloaded 10.5MB file. This will then download the ISO and build your bootable USB stick.
This page describes the process: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/win ... c3b507420d
Then, boot your PC/Laptop from the USB stick the Media Creation Tool made and then follow my instructions above...
You'll be all good now

Re: Computer operating systems
Thanks Jim. I had a problem with the Media file. It wouldn't run on my 'puter. I've since downloaded the ISO and Rufus. I had to use Rufus 3.22 legacy version, the newer ones are only for Win8 and newer (that might have been the issue with the Media file). It has just finished compiling the ISO onto the USB key ready to go. I've printed out the instructions you posted and am now going to start pulling out the 3 HDDs from the 'puter, stick the new one in and see what obstacles it throws at me next..........I'll let you know how it goes

Re: Computer operating systems
Excellent Pete
Rufus works brilliantly and I used that to make a bootable USB stick to build the forum's backup server...
Just before you go, it's a good plan to run cpu-z to check your processor is up to the job...

Re: Computer operating systems
Seems like a no go, bios and mobo are too old maybe. Had to re do Rufus using MBR instead of UEFI because Rufus threw a screen up saying it couldn't start.
On the next attemp it went through the bios checks, loaded the 4 blue squares, did nothing for a minute or so........then rebooted......and repeat.
I've got a Win10 on a bootable stick that I used to upgrade my daughter's. Will try that tomorrow for a laugh.
CPU is fine, I checked that a few days ago. (Screenshot posted a page or so back) Unless someone can see that it's not.

Re: Computer operating systems
Just a thought. I'm sure it doesn't but does the SSD need formatting? Possibly to MBR to suit my mobo. I thought on clean installs Windows sorted everything these days. If so I need to hunt down another Sata cable.

Re: Computer operating systems
No, the Win 11 installer will do all the hard disk preparation needed Pete, it's already low-level formatted out of the box and just needs to be partitioned by the installer and be made bootable...
If the USB stick made by the Windows Media Tool doesn't run and the Rufus-made one from the Win 11 ISO doesn't either then it's potentially not looking too hopeful as both run an initial cut-down version of Windows 11 to kick off and host the main install...
It's got to be well worth a try to install Windows 10 and then try an upgrade... Nothing to loose

I'm happy to report that both my Windows 11 installations are performing faultlessly
I did have a OneDrive problem but that was my fault! I resolved it with no data loss...

Excellent, I've had 11 running so long I take it for granted now. I can't even remember the differences from 10 !
