Next door neighbour has several aviaries with tarpaulins on their rooves, held down with bungees, been there for several years now and all intact.

Re: DIY with function over finesse!!
Brought over from the Computer operating systems thread:
I had the glazing units replaced within the existing frames, as several of them had blown being 22 years old, so we went for a complete replacement of all the panels. That should improve the insulation a bit but unfortunately the struggle to remove the main unit in the lounge window has resulted in a mildly perceptible draught between the top of the frame and the wall. I headed for my stocks for some suitable sealant but I only have black, brown and clear in stock so I'll have to go and get a cartridge of white tomorrow and run a bead along the top of the frame. Not a major grief but a tad irritating.

Re: DIY with function over finesse!!
An update on the second flood problem in my life, posted here, which turned out to be much worse than the Elstree one in terms of damage:

Re: DIY with function over finesse!!
Seeing this prompted me to go and do my regular checks of my kitchen, bathroom and downstairs loo plumbing... I do this on a regular basis, having once been in a similar situation.
Happily, all dry although I notice I do have a fair few spiders living under several of my kitchen units
I have no problem with sharing my house with a few spiders - they do good and keep a lot of undesirable pests at bay...

I did include spider space in the kitchen design but forgot to charge you for it

In that case, I'll have a chat with the spiders and see if I can extract some rent from them. Happy to split the proceeds 50/50mickthemaverick wrote: 18 Dec 2024, 08:57 I did include spider space in the kitchen design but forgot to charge you for it![]()

Do spiders farm flies?

Re: DIY with function over finesse!!
I wondered because when I opened the windows in my last house there were small balls of what looked like cotton wool around the edge, when springtime came there was a huge influx of flies from around those frames.CitroJim wrote: 18 Dec 2024, 16:25mickthemaverick wrote: 18 Dec 2024, 11:12 No Jim I am in a benevolent mood, you can keep everything that the spiders produce!!![]()

The windows in one of the buildings where I used to work used to be like that Eric, absolutely full of them... I believe clutches of spider eggs.Gibbo2286 wrote: 19 Dec 2024, 10:58 I wondered because when I opened the windows in my last house there were small balls of what looked like cotton wool around the edge, when springtime came there was a huge influx of flies from around those frames.
I've had similar in my conservatory, which at certain times of the year becomes full of tiny, baby spiders and very fine, invisible webs you only know are there when you get entangled in one and then have an irate baby spider crawling up your face.
