Citroen C5 7 rear suspension leak

Unread post by Ceenine »

I noticed a small fluid (not water) under the LHS rear wheel today. After inspection I found that it was exiting from the flexible rubber cover to the chrome piston between the sphere to the lower suspension mounting. The tie of the cover had broken giving rise to a small amount of fluid leakage, enough to fill a small thimble. Is this amount of fluid reasonable after ten years of manufacture or should I do something more than attach another replacement tie around the bottom of the cover. By the way, the metal suspension fluid hose is totally intact with no leakage.

The correct term for cover is flexible gaiter similar to steering arm’s gaiter.

A simple fix would be to use a plastic tie.

Hi, that doesn't sound like excessive leakage. But my understanding of the LDS type system is that there's not supposed to be any leakage because the gaiters have no leakage pipes unlike the old LHM Citroëns. So perhaps the strut is beginning to show sign of age.

Graeme is correct, there are no 'leak back' return pipes on the X7. Basically the struts are bonded rubber to metal - so if it's leaking from the strut it will get worse and need replacing.

Marc, would you please expand on the problem. A diagram would help. This problem is outside my pay grade being a retired chartered accountant. I have recently replaced the pipes to the spheres thanks to help from this amazing forum.

Think the only option is to change the full strut.

Suppliers appear to be a bit thin on the ground, quite unlike the fluid that has leaked. :rofl2:
