Hi everyone, im new to this forum. I have a question about which oil to use on my next service. Currently inside engine is total ecs 0w30. It has used some of oil in last 9k km so i topped up with ineo first with lets say 700-800ml. So i think i should probably change oil manufacturer it may change something. Only oil i found with PSA specification for that engine is Mannol legend extra and the great thing is that its quite cheaper than total ineo. But my dillema is even if it has manufacturer label on it so it is approved to go in engine i have heard from some people that its not really good oil? Whatever that means. I hope someone has tried this mannol instead of total so i can hear firsthand, or if someone knows something about chemistry of both oils...
I have another question about filters. First time im seeing Mecafilter France so i have no idea about quality of that brand, are they good for oil, diesel and air filters? Quite cheaper than some other brands.
My car is Citroen c4 II 2017 1.6hdi 88kw so it has dpf, adblue and all that stuff that cause headache and empty wallet sometimes.
Service soon - Mannol legend extra 0w30 or Total ineo first 0w30

Can't help you without knowing the exact engine, best to provide a VIN. Please post your VIN in full without spaces - it will be automatically masked from public view after submitting your post & will only be visible to staff.

I'm not really concerned with the ins and outs of that thread, but as far as the correct oil grade and PSA specifications are concerned you need the following for this vehicle. This is direct from Citroen as of today:
Grade: 0W30
Specifications: B71 2312
Grade: 0W30
Specifications: B71 2312

And it says it satisfies those specifications. So then its ok? I have another question again about those oils. Total ineo first 0w30 is ACEA C1 and Mannol Legend extra 0w30 is ACEA C2/C3. Which one is more suitable for hdi engine? It all goes in favor of Mannol but still im concerned its not what it says on label so i risk having dpf problems...GiveMeABreak wrote: 05 Dec 2024, 09:26 I'm not really concerned with the ins and outs of that thread, but as far as the correct oil grade and PSA specifications are concerned you need the following for this vehicle. Btw do you know anything about those filters in first question?

You need to forget brands for the moment and focus on the specifications. ACEA is not the same high standard as PSA recommend - see table below and the key.
Find an oil that meets PSA Requirements (B71 2312 in your case) first of all, then choose a brand to fit your budget.
Technical specifications of the ACEA standards
NOTE: The specifications of the ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers Association) standards do not meet the requirements of PEUGEOT / CITROEN / DS / OPEL / VAUXHALL.

I used Mannol 7919 Legend Extra on the most recent oil change on our 308 as it clearly says on the back that it complies with PSA B71 2312. That's all you can go with really. If they're lying, then that's another matter!

700 to 800 ml of oil used over 9k km is not much to worry about. The level would only go slightly down the dipstick so if at the top when first filled it would not have needed topping up since it would still have been within the max and min marks. If you change oil brands I would not expect the oil use to alter since the viscosity will be the same to meet the required spec.
I use Total oils since they are the brand recommended by Citroen and I am not bothered about saving a small amount of money compared to the risk of engine problems. I also get the oil filters from a Citroen dealer so I know they are correct, they may be available cheaper elsewhere but again not worth the risk.

Well it was close to minimum so it had to be added. Now its above mid level. On previous service it was added all 4 liters from container so i think it wasnt on dead maximum bcs filter takes something too. It says on autodata that engine takes 3.8L but including filter its more than 4L for sure. Thats probably what im going to do, i dont want to risk so il take original oil (total). Its better to pay a bit more than to think about it...PaulC5 wrote: 05 Dec 2024, 12:13 700 to 800 ml of oil used over 9k km is not much to worry about. Btw, my mechanic (actually two mechanics) recomended me to use 5w30 bcs it has 200k km. I cant find oil that grade with PSA specs so i wont do it but why do you think they said that? Why would it be better to take oil with higher grade?

Re: Service soon - Mannol legend extra 0w30 or Total ineo first 0w30
On a badly worn engine people used to put in a higher viscosity oil to reduce oil consumption but engines do not seem to wear badly these days. A 5W30 oil compared to a 0W30 oil has a higher viscosity when cold but the same when hot so would make it harder to start the engine. However, once hot it would not make any difference. If wanting to reduce oil use on a badly worn engine you might consider a 0W40 oil if the car manufacturer recommended it.
