clearing engine management log

Hi there,
does anyone know if the engine management light on a W reg Xsara Hdi will eventually switch itself off? The problem logged happens once a year (i.e. engine doesn't start 1st time, but will then start immediatelly 2nd time). I would like to be able to avoid paying the garage £80 just to tell me I have an intermittent fault.
Otherwise the car runs beautifully....55 Mpg....cruising VERY quickly etc, etc.
Pleas help!

it will only clear the memory after x amount of stop/start cycles if the fault is temporary,if what ever is causing the fault is still there it wont clear.

I see.......I have tried to disconnect the battery etc.... but to no avail. Do you know how many stop/starts it takes?

if it is Euro4 compliant then it is 50 stop/start cycles,1 cycle being start car engine heats up to certain temp (cant remember the exact temp) then switch off.
