C5 X7 bad power connection at hydraulic pump

Unread post by vallium »

Hydraulic pump in my C5 is running intermittently/struggling but everything is working fine if I put a light pressure on main power connector for motor, one with 2 thick wires. No burnt fuses as of yet, that's apparently most regular complaint. I've disassembled it and sprayed with contact cleaner without improvement, otherwise everything looks alright. Next step is headlight removal for better access as it's in pretty horrible place, hidden below hydraulic line.

Did anyone have similar problem or has any advice?

@vallium:
I had the same problem as you described.
Unfortunately it's not the connector, but the pcb (print plate) inside.
I shall look for the post and put a link overhere.
Greetings,
Kees.

Thank you for information.

As it's connected to brushes you have to take pump out of the car?

Yes, that's the best way, it's not difficult.

Please remember to depressurise the car's suspension before removing the pump...

...Worst case scenario, if your pump is toast, get another pump from another V6 C5, can't be an inline 4 C5 as they have a differnet electronics set up, then transfer the motherboard from the valve block of your old pump onto new pump. Or, transfer the PWM exciter board from the new pump onto your old one.

Mine is an inline 4 and I don't think suspension will have to be depressurized

I did a bit of searching overnight and found 2 procedures. This is regular one with pump taken out of the car

And this is alternative where you disassemble just electric motor through space otherwise occupied by headlight

Obviously you have to remove bumper and headlight, access is also a bit tight, but there is a huge upside of non-disturbed hydraulic circuit.

I've found this rather explanatory photo of coolant level sensor from C5 mk1

Solder cracks at connections and they become intermittent :)

In my case it probably didn't help that engine mounts were knackered for quite a while, especially hydraulic one next to pump.

If you're removing the pump, you're disconnecting the pipes, and thus it needs depressurised, I'm not just being a nag, a hydraulic injection injury will cost you a hand and maybe even an arm...

I'm not planing on removing the pump that's the thing. Check this video 5 minutes in

Electric motor can be disassembled with pump in situ. Headlight is already out, at first look access is even better than expected.
