Hi all,
My 2008 308SW 1.6hdi is smoking (sometimes heavily) when the engine is under high load, such as going up steep hills or high accelleration. It looks like black smoke so I'm thinking that the diesel/air mix is too rich. I would like suggestions as to what might be causing it.
A bit of potentially relevant backgound. Six or so months ago, it started cutting out at random times, eventually to the point where it would cut out almost straight away and would not restart. A lot of investigation/work was done to the fuel supply, including reconditioning the injectors, replacing the fuel pump, replacing the EGR valve, the crankshaft sensor and eventually the fule pressure sensor (which worked). However, since then the engine has been smoky. I found a small split in the air intake flexible pipe feeding into the engine and rpelaced that pipe. It made matters slightly but not completely better. The DPF is now getting clogged with all the soot the engine is putting out.
I am hoping to trace and fix whatever is causing the smokiness. Your help would be greatly appreciated!

It definitely sounds like an Air / Fuel mixture problem and really needs some further investigation. If you have Lexia / Diagbox or have undertaken a diagnostic, pop up any fault codes long with your VIN (automasked on post submission) for further info.

Thanks, GiveMeABreak,
The codes are P0299, P0490, P1490, P1446, P1351, P0420, P1459, P1447 annd P0402. The DFP additive system is empty (don't think it was ever refilled by earlier ownders as the bag had perished and split) and I am having that refilled this week.
VIN is VF3**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]

Ok, so sitting comfortably?
Here are all the fault code descriptors for you. Rather than regurgitate everything, have a read through. You'll see that the the engine ECU will apply similar downgrade modes and limit functions whilst these faults are active. Your EGR seems to be getting stuck too, as the engine ECU normally tries to clean this to help prevent sticking by opening and closing it several times, so that may be bunged up and need looking at.

Re: Peugeot 308 1.6hdi smoky exhaust
Thanks for the info - that's really helpful.
Have put JLM DPF cleaner in the tank. PAT fluid tank is being replaced on Wednesday. Mikght have to have the DPF professionally cleaned. Will have the EGR valve looked at. Looks like the turbo will have to be looked at as well.
Is it worth looking at the the air temp sensor? Nothing above seemed to suggest so; however, I am worried I might have damaged it when I repared the leaking pipe between the intercooler and engine air intake (wipoing oil out too roughl!).

Re: Peugeot 308 1.6hdi smoky exhaust
If you mean the Air Flow Meter (MAF), then this can obviously play havoc with the Air / Fuelling as the engine ECU relies on the data to make adjustments. You can get a spray cleaner designed for MAFs, but be careful of the sensor wire, it is very sensitive and easily damaged if cleaining.

Re: Peugeot 308 1.6hdi smoky exhaust
Thanks - I will probably have a look at the MAF to see if it needs cleaning. However, the sensor I am referring to is attached to the assembly that comes between the intercooler and the engine itself. There is a pressure sensor and temperature sensor just before the final flexible pipe leading into the intake manifold. It was the temperature sensor that I bashed when having a clean around. I'm not sure if that will make any difference. It's not a very expensive component and so I might just change it anyway.

Ok, just get a decent branded one and not a Eurocarparts special, as they are notoriously poor and often DOA.

I was wondering if the problem was finally resolved? I have the same engine and it smokes a lot when I accelerate, but the OBD shows no error code.
