Re: One for the Air Buffs
With "one for the ship/boat buffs" considering today songs with boat/ship names in their titles, you may think yes that's the place for the "Good Ship Lollipop".
Not so the "Good Ship Lollipop" of the eponymous song performed by Shirley Temple and the associated famous scene in the film "Bright Eyes", was an opportunity taken by American Airlines and the Douglas Aircraft Company to promote air travel and the good ship was a Douglas DC2.
They provided a DC-2, designated "A-74", aircraft for the exterior shots while a true to scale mock up was provided for the interior scenes.
There could be better vids than this. Aussie voice over. At least for pub quizzers it reveals that TWA originally stood for Transcontinental and Western Air before it became known as Trans World Airlines

Re: One for the Air Buffs
Not that difficult to identify...try the internet
What is this aircraft.
The clue is in the picture, it is a screenshot of the Citroen Visa 1987/88 French advert, where it ludicrously raced the jet, off an Aircraft Carrier, and landed on a submarine. Bonkers but refreshing. The whole 1 minute story in moving pictures is on the "One for the Boat Buff's Thread" right now.
French Plane, French Aircraft Carrier, French Submarine, French Car, and the dialogue is in French.
Have a go what's this plane then

Re: One for the Air Buffs
My first ever flight July 1981, was at Sunderland Airport . Took off in a Cessna something or other and then jumped out at 2500 feet
Still got the Certificate
Great experience but didn't want to take it up as a hobby

Bit of research required to get the gist of those posts.Rp0thejester wrote: 17 Oct 2024, 20:13 You can't sneak a fake Phantom past me....That's a Decepticon!!!!! Bumble bee to the rescue!!
The key in LedZep's post is HAF. Hellenic Air Force (Greek Air Force). AUP is the Avionics upgrade Program aka "Peace Icarus 2000" a program to upgrade 36 McDonnell Douglas F4-E Phantom Aircraft Of the Hellenic Air Force. The contract was won after fierce competition, by the Military Aircraft Business Unit of the European Aeronautics Defence and Space Company (EADS, Munich) was awarded the "Peace Icarus 2000" contract, which officially started after arrival of the HAF aircraft in Germany in autumn 1997.
In pretty recent news Greece has signed a deal (July 2024) to acquire for 20 F-35A Lightning II jets with an option for an additional 20 aircraft. To replace its ageing McDonnell Douglas F4-e Phantom II fleet.

Re: One for the Air Buffs
Unfortunately, all journeys have an end.And F-4 are months from it after 50 years of service and many sacrifices. As an upgrade F-4, Hellenic program was a successful one with many improvements like a modified version radar of F-18 AN/APG-65 , Litening targeting pod (Rafael) and other.I have to mention that photo, has won a competition at this year's Royal International Air Tattoo by a student, Ben Smith.

Tiny BroadwickGeorgia Ann "Tiny" Thompson Broadwick (April 8, 1893 in Oxford, North Carolina – August 25, 1978 in Long Beach, California), or Georgia Broadwick, previously known as Georgia Jacobs, and later known as Georgia Brown, was an American pioneering parachutist and the inventor of the ripcord.[1] She was the first woman to jump from an airplane, and the first person to jump from a seaplane.

Re: One for the Air Buffs
And Adeline Gray.
Parachutist!Hartford, Connecticut—June 6, 1942: Fifty observers from the U.S. Army and Navy watch from the ground as Adeline Gray, a 24-year-old rigger at the Pioneer Parachute Company, steps from the wing of a plane 2,500 feet over Brainard Field to make her 33rd lifetime jump. She is testing, for the very first time, a parachute made from nylon, a new strong and resilient fabric primarily used to make women’s stockings.
Normandy, France—June 6, 1944: Two years to the day after Gray’s jump in Hartford, the D-Day invasions begin. Thousands of U.S. paratroopers—undoubtedly having never heard of the courageous and talented young woman who proved that nylon parachutes could work—descend under the innovative canopies that would help the Allies win the war.
