MattBLancs wrote: 12 Oct 2024, 18:32 Are you just swapping the boot Jim, or full track rod end?

It soon snowballs to both track rods and tracking re-set when I'm in that scenario! :)

I have replacements in my big spares order Matt so for expediency, as long as it turns up in time, I'll replace the whole thing this time although as the old one is in good condition it's well worth a reboot and that will be done :) I'm keen to keep good stocks of AX stuff and overhaul where possible now...

Likewise I have new inner ends on the way and then will look to refurbish the old, perished ones...

Other side looks fine...

100% agree, put a new boot rubber on.....we do not "fix" things enough these days.

You'll like what's going on in my thread then,

(Note: that might be optimistic because I don't know if it's actually fixed it or not yet...)

I saw that Matt :D A most excellent piece of work! Well done :D

Alasdair, you're right but sadly so much modern stuff really is not very repairable at all, especially modern electronics... Made to be chucked away when it fails. Shocking... We need to go back to things being easily overhauled and kept going. Like my old radios and cars - infinitely repairable. No radio in my house is younger then 40 and some, like parts of my stereo system, considerably older. When my telly goes on the blink it'll be a bin job; both almost impossible and uneconomic to fix

When my stereo amp, tuner, tape deck, MD player and record deck ever play up they are fixed and usually fairly easily.

Surface mount components and general miniaturisation is making stuff very difficult to fix

I had a small win this week, our Epson inkjet printer (XP-610) came up with a message "Waste ink tank full, contact Epson support". This requires sending the printer physically to a service center and paying them to fit new ink pads and resetting the counter, which is quite uneconomic.

After trying 3 different hacked versions of Epson's own tool (which either did not work or contained malware, I found https://github.com/Ircama/epson_print_conf which is an open source project providing the reset functionality for a range of Epson printers. Running that, then physically washing the waste ink pads got the printer back online. TBH I probably would have just bought a new printer, but a couple of months ago I bought 2 sets of spare ink cartridges for the printer.

That whole concept is a new one on me Mike, is it just Epsons that have that as I have only ever had HPs or Brothers and have never come across a waste ink tank or washing the pads etc? :)

All inkjet printers have pads or tanks that collect waste ink during head cleaning (and perhaps other) operations, but Epson put a software lock that effectively bricks the machine. Having cleaned the pads, I think that they would have been good for another 5 years without cleaning.

Every day's a school day!! I daresay that in my 38 years of inkjets I have never used one frequently enough for pads to become oversoaked. They probably dry out between my uses!! :-D

I did have to clean them on another printer a few years ago, but I think the counter could be reset on the front panel.

I don't know which brand of printer I will buy next time, I have had bad experiences with all of them now, I suppose I will start again at the beginning of the list with Cannon, because it is more than 20 years since they upset me with lack of driver updates for a nearly new printer.

I've never owned an Epson having had trouble with them at BT. The first two I had were Brothers but the ink became too expensive so I switched to HP and am currently on my second one which I've had for 8 years. I broke the previous HP by dropping it during a room decorating session!! It was still working but SWMBO wouldn't accept the cracked casing!! :-D

Something about that sentence amuses me! Mick's brother's were too expensive so he had to disown them! :-D

If only you'd a hot stapler back then! Is the hand brush still functioning well after the repair?

A small bit of number noticing Jim, that's you off page 666 some way down page 667 which at 15 posts per page has taken you past the 10,000 post mark on your blog.

Have a pair of AX's in celebration....You may have seen the Yellow Saxo "Mischief" special edition posted yesterday on favourite colours for cars. The AX also had a number of special editions of course, and surprisingly this one caught my eye...like the backgound and its an unusual "colour". Couleur unique:ERZ gris Gabion métallisé,

Probably not a favourite colour, but unusual and therefore interesting in the Falcon book! :-D
