Particle filter fluid low

Unread post by 2cvandy »

Sorry, I know this has been covered before, believe me I've waded through the threads on this topic for guidance and just gotten more confused.
I'm hoping somebody can give me an idiots guide to the process ?
The car is a 2012 2.2 HDI tourer auto.
First question is does it matter if the warning light is on for a while ? I was 300 miles from home when it lit up and likely to cover another 300 before I get around to re-filling. I'm assuming that won't cause problems ?
The actual re-fil process looks easy enough, but how much fluid ? I've seen various amounts quoted, I'd intended to fill it till it dribbles out the overflow, or should I be adding a specific amount ?
Then we come to the interesting bit, the counter re-set.
I have recently bought a diagbox (9.91) but so far only used it for a very simple job.
So I really could do with some guidance.
I've had a look through the menus, and I think I need to go into "repair", then from the global test "ignition/injection", then "pack repair",,, does any of that sound right ?
But then I'm lost, I didn't go any further after reading all the dire warnings about amateurs causing problems, and I'm definitely an amateur with this :)
A step by step guide through the re-set process would be really helpful, plus, will the fault code disappear after a counter re-set, or do I need to delete that ?
Many thanks in advance for any guidance.

One last question if I may, since the "fluid low" fault flashed up I'm also getting a fault message saying the auto door locking is disabled. I didn't know the car had such a feature, certainly don't need it, anybody know what that's about and how to get rid of it ?

Not really an issue if the warning light is on a while, it only injects a small amount each time you fill up.
If you look in the live data you should be able to see how much fluid was present when new, and how much left now; most likely a litre will be plenty for the remaining life of the car!
You look to be in the right place to re-set the level, it's probably under replacement parts - you can't do any harm moving on from that screen.
You may need to reset it in the additive ECU as well, and then you might still have to go back and delete the fault code.

... and just to add that you must put in a minimum of 1 litre, but can add a couple in if you're intending to hang on to it, then you shouldn't need to worry about it again.

As for the auto locking, there's a feature that you can activate or deactivate. It basically means when the vehicle moves off above about 6 mph, it locks all the doors for you - designed against traffic light theft, where crims will eyeball valuables on the passenger or rear seats, then attempt to open the door, grab your gear and leg it.

It's a feature that I always have on.

To activate or deactivate this feature, you use the central locking button on the dash shown at 'A':
CLB.PNG
When in the vehicle close the doors and press and hold this button for at least 2 seconds - a confirmation message will appear on the instrument panel display with an audible signal. To deactivate, just repeat.

Thanks for the replies,
I bought 3 litres intending to fill the tank, so I guess I might as well pour in as much as she'll take.
I'll definitely be hanging on to this one for a while, my last two (a Xantia and then a C5 Mk1) were driven till their death, this will be no different. The longer I can keep this running the better, I really don't want to give up that suspension. She's only showing 145,000km so far so should be good for a few years yet.
I do have form for hanging on to cars, I bought my 2CV in 1998 !
As far as the auto locking goes, I think that must have already been deactivated when I bought the car, it's certainly never locked the doors. So I'm curious as to why I've never seen the warning before, it shows every time I turn on the ignition now...

So just re-activate is using the method I showed and that should be the end of the warning.

Just remember that if you have driven off and come to a stop later (with the engine still running), and say you are picking a passenger up for example, you'll just have to press the locking button shown above once to unlock the vehicle so they can get in.

As for the additive (which I had intended to post here, but posted it on another related post by mistake)

The additive level will be fine for a while as Richard says - but the amount of additive is only estimated, not physically measured, so it's telling you it thinks it's below a threshold and needs topping up. Because of this being an estimate, there's no actual way of determining the exact level remaining without physically removing and draining the tank and measuring the content (which is what an official service will do at 60k Miles, then every 20k Miles on a DW12C 2.2 engine), or just top it up at 140k on a DW12BTED4 2.2 (175) vehicle.

I hope you don't mind me asking, where did you buy it? I'm looking to do pretty much the same job as you but I'm having a hard time finding someone who sells the cables that seems reliable.

I've had the cables / hardware for a while, they came with my last car, so are probably at least 10 years old.
I never had cause to bother with them on my old C5, but having replaced it with an X7, and reading that diagbox is needed for simple tasks like changing the rear brake pads, I thought I'd better get it sorted. So I bought a cheap windows 10 laptop and updated software from EasyDiagnostics.

Thing is, I live in rural France, I'm unlikely to be carjacked :-D
I'd prefer the system deactivated, just don't want the warning message beeping and flashing every time I turn the ignition on. No idea why it is tbh, it's never done it before. It's hardly a "fault" if it can be turned on and off so easily. Maybe when I get rid of the "low fluid" warning this one will vanish as mysteriously as it appeared. [-o<

I never thought of car jacking, I thought it was a child safety feature for the doors to lock. I'm glad I don't live near you Marc

I live in the back and beyond in the Welsh Mountains - only cave dwellers here.
:taz:
The point is we all have to go into towns and cities at some point were this sort of thing is a possibility, so I just leave it on and forget it.

.... unless of course I had a load of 70s Showaddywaddy LPs I wanted to get rid off

Yes, the system I referred to previously has no impact on opening the doors from the inside.

Re Child locks - which is a separate thing:

Child locks on the doors can be either manual (where ignition key is used to insert into the specific rear door aperture and turned to prevent each rear doors from being opened from the inside; or

On later vehicles there's a dedicated electronic control on the dash that is more convenient for doing the same.

Okay,
topped up the fluid this morning, poured in the whole 3 litres, and nothing came out the overflow. I've seen a chart somewhere on this forum that says my car has a 3.5 litre tank, I guess it really was empty.
Went through "repair" - "ignition/injection" - "repair pack" - "replacement parts" - "filling of additive tank" -
so far so good, then I came to the screen in the pic, which I wasn't expecting. Anyway, followed the instructions, set up "after sales zone 4", although I've no idea what that means ?
But a successful result I think, service light is out, the warning message has disappeared at start up, and even the annoying "automatic door lock deactivated message" is no more.

Thanks for the advice, unfortunately I doubt it'll be the last time I need to ask :-D

Well done - ignore that message in the last screen - it's only for dealer-use and won't affect operations.
