Auto Electrics 1963 Renault Caravelle

Hi, any oldtimers recall this little rear engine beauty? Thing is after switching engine off, there was smoke coming from engine bay so I disconnected battery as quickly as I could and investigated. The voltage regulator cover had burn marks on it and the insulation on a black wire to/from regulator was melted to another (red) wire within the same harness but going to/from starter motor. Tracing the melted harness to the front of the car, both wires seemed to lead to/from the ammeter ( not original equipment). Inside the regulator a contact point had burned right off and welded itself to the cover. Does anyone have ideas how, why, what could cause this and do I need to replace regulator with same Ducellier part or if any old Lucas, Bosch etc would do the trick?

The heavy red wire would be the charge wire TO the battery - it simply takes the route to the starter as this has got an even heavier constant connection to battery + terminal.
It's not clear from your description where the black wire ends up ?
Anyways - I'm pretty sure your Reno got the standard charge circuit of cars of that age - meaning you can pretty much use anything from classic/old timer suppliers.
You will find the wire terminals on the charge relay is marked up with the standard ID's : D- , D+ , etc.
Further more you will pretty easy recognise the wiring/setup from any street car electric diagram of the time.
The cause of the problem is not easy to guesstimate on - but be suspicious in the battery itself. If this had a very low charge last time the Reno was started - the whole charge circuit may have been overloaded - causing heat in bad connections to start off a nasty shortcircuit.
I still remember my own Dad's first car : a German build Goggomobil which set off fire because of - charge circuit failure [8)]
