The GreenFleet Rally

Unread post by Gibbo2286 »

This is a series of videos covering the rally I've put here the link to the first I assume the rest will follow on:

Well it doesn't run continuously so here are the other links:

Sorry Gibbo, normally I would watch any rally videos but for me 50% of motorsport is about the surrounding atmosphere which is created by the smells and the sounds, take those away and you have more chance of getting Putin to declare unilateral peace than me to observe rallying in a 'silent movie' mode!! :-D
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!

So you're not up for the challenge next year then Mick. :-D

Well, not so sure about that, doing is far more enjoyable than watching so I daresay I could cope without the atmosphere!! :-D

Having looked into it, the EV Rally 2024 seems to be a marketing operation run by 'lobbying company' PSI-Media. Not sure I'm into watching marketing videos.... but then again, I am an old 'stick in the mud' 8-[ :rofl2:
https://www.psi-media.co.uk/greenfleet

The 'partners' for Greenfleet are, amongst others...

The Government in the form of The Orifice of Zero Emission Vehicles.
The Scottish Government in the form of Transport Scotland.
The Government in the form of Infrastructure and Projects Authority.
The SMMT.
Blue Light Commercial* (arms-length govt.)
Zemo Partnership (EV lobbying company https://www.zemo.org.uk/about-us.htm)
National Grid (never heard of 'em  )
National Highways
BVRLA (British Vehicle Renting & Leasing Assoc)
AFP (Assoc Fleet Professionals)

I think this rally might have been the one that local BBC South transport correspondent Paul Clifton took part in.

*- BlueLight Commercial was established by the Home Office and policing sector in June 2020, to work in collaboration with blue light organisations to help transform commercial services.
We are publicly funded and operate on a not-for-profit basis, as a private company limited by guarantee. We sit within the definition of a contracting authority under the Procurement Act, creating a single voice to the market and an agile commercial engagement model. https://bluelightcommercial.police.uk/about/

Not really a marketing operation bobins more a show of what can be done to bust the myths put out by the oil industry and the anti EV brigade.
I was particularly interested to see the Maxus vans, they're the former Leyland Daf Sherpas, my brother worked on the design of their EV long before the company was allowed to collapse by it's foreign owners and refused help to continue by Mandelson then the bits picked up by the Chinese.

Maybe some of the sceptics among us could be converted with a few demo drives or possibly just go for the home electrics parts of the show here:

A bit of homework for you Gibbo, and any other EVangelists out there :) My main daily drive vehicle is my pick up truck and I've had it for well over a decade, if I were to replace it with a similar pick up truck my main requirements are:
Single cab - at least 7' load bed.
Minimum 250 miles range.
Relatively low mileage.
Minimum 1 tonne payload.
Sub £20k second hand.
Doesn't need to be 4WD.
Minimum 1600kg tow capacity.
I don't want a Transit van or similar sized vehicle as I don't want that parked on my driveway.

If you can find me a suitable EV that fits the bill then I'll look into it further. How does that sound ? :)

I just had a look at the show linked by Gibbo and my first observation was that a concessionary ticket for one day is £15.60. Add to that the cost of getting there and back, paying an extortionate price for a very average lunch, if past Farnborough events are anything to go by, and it would be a pretty expensive day out for me! Hardly the way to attract us non evangelists!! :-D

Cheaper than going to ride the dodgems at the fairground Mick or the price of a look at HMS Victory or the SS Great Britain in Bristol (£15 to park your car there.)

I can't argue with that Eric but watching all the football, cricket, golf, motorsport, snooker and darts I want costs me less than £1.00 a day so as enjoyable ways to pass my time it's a no brainer! :-D

Of course my main passion being actually driving, I have no issue with spending money on petrol and hotel costs to facilitate my many road trips, which in general would not be feasible in my timescales if I had to build in charging times!! :-D
