Well as im sure your all aware my car suffers from vibrations which after balancing the wheels, wheel alignment, all round brake job still not sure whats causing it...anyway i have learned to live with that and cant say it "winds" me up.
However my car has started to develop a "knocking/thudding" sound at the back, checked the sub etc wasnt loose and such forth this morning before my 35 mile drive to work on the A1 and the thuds occure all the time it would seem even on fairly good road surfaces, it reminds me of a knackered anti-roll link arm which were both replaced a few months ago at the front, but this would appear to be coming from the back offside, aswell as thuds from the front.
(God i hate describing noises)
After changing from steels with budget tyres on (the ride was really nice although slippery cornering, now changed to Saxo VTR with michelins and although no more slipping the ride is plain awful too be honest, i have a trip to cornwall in two weeks and a half and wouldnt like to thing the car is going to die on me, 350 miles away from home.
God knows what im meaning with my noise descriptions, poor to say the least, but does anyone have an inkling as to why all the thuds.
Thanks in advance!!

Hi there, If the thudding from the rear is especially noticeable when braking on poor road surfaces, then I'm pretty sure that one or both of the (forward)rear subframe mounting bushes have failed.. ( you won't find any play when checking under the car)They are a fairly straightforward diy job with a couple of jacks.. ( Its recommended that you change all 4 mountings together.. the car won't half drive better! and it may even help with the vibrations you're getting) hope this helps, Martin

Thanks very much for your suggestions, i have noticed thuddering when braking at the back and since ive added 40,000 onto it within a year i should expect something to go amiss, dont really mind the cost of repairs to a certain extent as its done me proud, will speak to Wilkobob and arrange a weekend of work.
Any more suggestions greatly appreciated of course!

Two other causes of thuds from the rear of ZX's (my daughter has one and my father had one):
- rear hatch hinges worn (try moving the hinge end of the hatch while its open and you'll probably see a lot of movement)
- knackered needle bearing in rear torsion spring tube (nasty and difficult job)
