Xantia is dead. Long Live Xantia!

Unread post by RDD »

Well, after much help from you guys, my turbo-diesel Xantia gave me 8 months of motoring happiness, for the princely purchase price of £1. New spheres, rear height corrector, and some other niff-naff got me around in comfort.
Until my wife stuffed it last Saturday! Went into the back of another car, in the rain. Written off, beyond economical repair.

So I bought another! Got a P-reg 2-litre 16v SX Estate, for £300, with 7 months MOT, some tax, and all it needs is new front brake discs and pads.....not a bad little deal, methinks.

So I'll spend a few weeks getting to know my new Xantia, and hopefully cure any gremlins that occur.....

Blimey, the prices of these cars is quite shocking. If that is a solid car, that is a lot of motor for your money.
Built by a specialist coachbuilder too.

I just noticed the number plate. It's a couple of numbers up from my ZX - they would have been in the same showroom when new. [:D]

Well bang goes my theroy that you never see a Xant stuffed at the front, because the brakes are so good they tend to be rammed. [xx(]

Well, he said it was in the rain. All bets are off in the rain...these days with ABS people are so used to the wheels not locking that they get caught totally by surprise by just how much longer an emergency stop in the rain takes....(and don't drive accordingly until AFTER their first prang in the rain [;)])
ABS is a wonderful thing but it can certainly give you a false sense of security unless you've actually tried an emergency stop in the rain to bring you back down to reality... [:D]

Happy motoring with your new car mate looks good. £300 is cheap I must say for that car, sounds like an absolute bargain. If you don't mind me asking what are you going to do with your old car? do you think you might take some parts?
I am looking for an ignition switch by the way.

The thing about braking in the rain is that the car in front is affected just as much as you are, so when he sticks his brakes on you don't have to worry because you'll both take longer to stop. It's when you aren't watching whats going on or tailgating in the rain that the problems happen.

Well, firstly, it didn't have ABS (it was a '95 LX), and the car in front was stationary just round a corner on a fast bit of A-road. My wife only passed her test in May, and slammed on the anchors, as you tend to do when you see the rear of the car in front getting bigger..Oh well. The new one has ABS :)
The car was carted off to a bodyshop 100-odd miles away. It's the insurance companies property now, so unfortunately, there's no bits available.
And, yes, a Turbo-diesel would have been nicer, but when this estate was too good to pas up....

Seems a damn good buy for the money? I've heard garages say that there's no market for cars about that price range, but I think it may be surprising.
My previous car was a Vauxhall Cavalier and it had a prang when a Punto hit the engine bay area side on. The insurance company wrote it off and gave us £925 for it (which was more than it cost). The coachbuilders say most insurance companies tend to write cheaper cars off, even if they are basically repairable as it's not worth their while.

Yeah, Xantia's don't seem to be too attractive at the moment. Don't know why, I love 'em!
However, My old (crashed) Xant was almost round to 200,000 miles, so I was a bit sad not to make it to 200k....
