Anyone know if the ECU on these vans can just be replaced "like for like" or if they would need to be programmed?

It depends what you have fitted - all these injection ECUs of this era can have different versions - and each as to be configured correctly for gear ratios and other wizardry. So may not need coding as such, but may need configuring as if a donor, it may be from a different vehicle with different configuration. A VIN will help identify what system you have.

Is It a Lucas DCN2?
If so if i remember right they are not coded to the immobiliser. The immobiliser is in the stop solenoid in the injection pump & that is matched to the CPH or immobiliser box.
Why do you need to change it? The failure of these are normally pretty rare as they only really control advance & EGR.
