Buying used boxer van - will the warranty be valid?

Unread post by muffinmonkey »

Hi,

I'm looking at buying a 2022 boxer van. The van dealer states it comes with a manufacturers warranty but is there any way to check if it will be honoured?

It was first serviced end of 2023 at 42k miles, then just recently at 53k miles.

Any help much appreciated :)

Manufacturer warranties will generally require the vehicle to be serviced annually as a minimum or within the set mileage - whichever comes first, and that the specific required servicing operations are undertaken if not done at a dealership.

42k miles for the first service is well outside the requirement - but if you can provide the VIN, I'll be able to confirm servicing the interval. If it's missed a service or gone this long without an initial service, any warranty provided by the manufacturer will likely be void as it's a condition of warranty.

Ok thanks, 42K does seem a long time. VIN is VF3**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]

Ok, so the warranty period started from 21/12/2022.

As for servicing, this specific vehicle requires 32k mile or 2 year servicing - whichever comes first, so if what you say is the case and without further confirmation from a Peugeot dealer regarding another service, it will have gone 10k miles over it's servicing schedule.

So 10k miles over the service schedule would invalidate the warranty? Any way to get an official confirmation from Peugeot? I'm just wondering what to say when I go back to the dealer as I've already put a deposit down.

Many thanks for your help btw

HI

So it's possible for the dealer to have not stamped the logbook after a service if was not to hand at the time (I've often forgotten to take mine in and get it stamped later), so ask the dealer for evidence of the first service. They should have access to the records if the service was undertaken at an official dealership as they all have access to the records.

They cannot make a claim about having a warranty, if it is null and void because of a missed service - that is dishonest and I'm sure illegal to make false claims.

If they have documentary evidence that the vehicle was serviced, ask for the evidence or a stamp in the log book as you will need that for a future buyer.

You should also be entitled to your deposit back, as if they cannot provide evidence of the service, then the sales claims regarding the warranty are not true and therefore that is misleading and false selling.

Another example is we had a recent case of a member putting a deposit down on a 24 plate car, but he later found out when we checked that the car was actually built 19 months ago and late registered! So when he pointed that out, he got his deposit back immediately.

All excellent advice. Its not an official Peugeot dealer just a local van place with receipts of the service history. I will go back armed with my new knowledge, fingers crossed :)

thanks again

Ok, but a non-Peugeot franchised garage won't have access to the official servicing records that a dealer will have, just so you are aware.

This is an excerpt from Peugeot the warranty for new vehicles:
What is required to benefit fully from the contractual warranty?
Present your vehicle's up-to-date "Maintenance Record", including the warranties
certificate in particular, duly completed by the dealership which sold the vehicle.

Have the vehicle maintained and serviced in strict conformity with PEUGEOT's instructions
and be able to provide proof of this (maintenance records, invoices, etc.).

I spoke to the dealer who seems to think there was another service at a local garage at 17k...and he will try and get a copy of the invoice.

He is adamant that "warranties certificates" are not given out and everything is done by the Reg. He seems like a very trustworthy guy..haha famous last words but the garage does have a very good reputation.

Yes, he's correct about that, I just posted an extract from the Peugeot website about the warranties from their own T&C's to show you that it's a condition of warranty that servicing is undertaken according to schedules and operations.

All I'm saying is that if you had an issue after purchase and went to a dealer, they likely would not honour the warranty if you could not prove with evidence that the vehicle was properly serviced and on time, as the dealership network would have no record af an independent service being undertaken and what operations were carried out.

Thanks for the info and you are absolutely right, without service history evidence the warranty would not be valid.
Much appreciated
