Spacetourer Noisy Engine?

Unread post by Sjdye »

Really sorry if this is not the right forum for this post, but I basically know nothing about cars and am looking for some advice!

Today we went to view a 2000 C4 Spacetourer. Looked like a really nice car, seemed to drive well etc. But when we opened the bonnet with the car idling it seemed surprisingly noisy (hadn't noticed it when driving). It basically looked and sounded a bit rattley. The guy at the dealership said that's just how the 1.2L, 3 cylinder engines sound and it was not the sign of any issue, and the car comes with 12 month warranty.

So, anyone got any thoughts on this? The guy seemed alright and the car seemed decent but this really pranged us out.

I took a quick video but can't work put how to post it.

Thanks folks

Welcome along

You can post the video on YouTube, then link it here - but it's not all that helpful as all engines sound terrible on video! The 1.2 at idle can sound a bit ratty as it's a 3 cylinder - however if there is any doubt, leave it - this engine has a pretty terrible reputation, oil pressure, cam belt, oil consumption, rough running, etc etc...

They are a bit noisy as they are 3 cylinder and direct injection.
I would opt for a diesel unless you only do short drives.
Just like Richard says the 1.2 Puretech has many common failures, and are very sensetive to lack of service. They require a certain type of oil and the wet timing belt needs replacing often.

I really like the C4 Picasso platform, but my favourite choises are the early Euro5 1.6HDI manual (no adblue) or a 2.0BlueHDI
I have various repair handbooks and wiring diagrams for C5 mk1, Xantia, XM, Berlingo and C3 mk1.
I have Lexia/Diagbox (Sweden) and Servicebox/sedre
