Trivia Investigation-Naming Vehicles

Unread post by NewcastleFalcon »

Recently, and I have to say inevitably, Citrojim introduced us all to his latest car naming-odyssey. You may have come across the Falcon view on such matters, possibly not universally shared! :-D
CitroJim wrote: 02 Aug 2024, 16:18 I gave Strawberry a good bath today :-D
It's happened :!: as I knew it would. Permit me one token cringe Jim from Chez Falcon if you will, on your first use day as confirmation of the official name. I will of course follow the adventures of your little Red AX with great interest as ever , as I have for the Blue one and the now departed White one, and the now departed White Saxo before that :-D As a homage and in no way a Falcon endorsement of the naming activity thing, the shade of red I chose for the font colour for the S-word is no ordinary red, but is the red selected from the Falcon Wild Strawberry picture previously posted :-D In big letters here too. I have named the unique colour
Falcon Northumberland Wild Strawberry Red
Red 223 Green 48 blue 45 = #DF302D
Strawberry
So where did it start on the FCF :?: Can we Find out from the Archives :?:
Has anyone indulged in giving their vehicles lets say "pet names"?

I'm wondering, in the creative writing of "Otterchops", which I do give much credit for an unusual approach, could we have been the first incarnation of the named-vehicle phenomenon openly declared on the FCF. I don't think the former food and drink of the FCF in the shape of Xantias lend themselves to the naming thing as some alliteration is often required. "Xavier the Xantia" is one of the few alliterations possible, and is unused on the FCF as far as I am aware. I am familiar with "Gabby" through the pages of the forum, which has been through several hands with naming being number-plate based.

Do your best to chip in :-D

Trivia Investigation-Naming Vehicles

I have found a thread from 2015...started by Zelandeth, and if remaining contributors to that thread wish for a reminisce the link is here. It would appear that Zelandeth is indeed our FCF champion of naming vehicles.
Its a very interesting thread, and "lost" but now found with the odd gem! Members who contributed to that thread in order of appearance are Zelandeth, Stickyfinger, CitroJim, daviemck2006, jodyone, michel , citronut, hell razor 5543, Andy F, MacAU, Fake Concern, chinkostu, waynedance, addo, xantianut,

A selection of interesting bits, revealed in the thread only a couple of pages, read it yourself for the answers.
Who instigated the name "Gabby" and what was its previous name :?:
and the pièce de résistance
Why is Xantianut's C5 called Otterchops :?:
Looks like CitroJim has had a change of heart since 2015 :-D
CitroJim wrote: 17 Apr 2015, 04:23 Never been one for naming cars really...

The Activa has always been known as 'The Activa' but the C1 is occasionally called 'Eyelashes' for reasons you can discover deep in my blog....

Look for entries around my birthday - late July

My V6s were known as 'Old V6' and 'New V6' Old V6 I have again as my V6 Activa Donor and New V6 has recently moved on to pastures new...

I really aught to get into naming cars! My two boys (2 and 5) are very keen on talking to me about my cars, sadly as we don't have the naming compulsion we have many, many conversations about:

Excellent Matt, 2 and 5 the perfect age for naming vehicles. Have you come across the joyful childhood book called Tootles the Taxi and Other Rhymes. Lively simple rhymes the most fantastic artwork in the illustrations, and appealing across the generations.
NewcastleFalcon wrote: 28 Jun 2014, 21:33 I like a bit of nostalgia from time to time. Like the I-Spy books, I also remember with affection the old ladybird books. As well as the usual well loved childrens stories, there were nature ones, and a decent crop of historical ones as well. They were always absolutely beautifully illustrated, and one of the artists was

John Kenney also responsible for the first illustrations of "The Eight Famous Engines" by The Rev.W.Awdry

The particular book which was also a favourite of our own girls growing up was "Tootles the Taxi". Lovely illustrations by John Kenney, giving character to each of the cars, vans bikes and lorries and simple rhymes. So if there is anyone else that remembers this little gem, I'll give you "Tootles the Taxi" from row 1, and "Oompus the Omnibus" from row 5, can you name any of the others.....?

The full book is one of the 41 million literary gems available on the Internet Archive
The only way to enjoy it is in the actual book, in my view, turning the pages to reveal the next picture and the next rhyme.
The full alliterative list of named vehicles in the book, each with a rhyme is here
Tootles the taxi - Oompus the omnibus - Tony the tractor - Archie the Ambulance - Stumbles the steam-roller - Larry the lorry - Co-Co the caravan - Binkie the bicycle - Maurice the motor - Minnie the milk-float - Monty the motor coach - Roy the removal van - Colin the cattle truck - Mickey the mail van - Willie the water cart - Ronnie the railway dray - Timbo the trolley-bus - Cuthbert the coal cart - Billy the baker's van - Minkie the motor-bike - Biffo the bull-dozer - Ike the ice-cream van - Flashy the fire-engine - Terry the tanker.

Yes exactly that Matt bit of a modernisation but the same format using different forms of transport/names. Oompus the Omnibus didn't make it to the new book :-D

Loving all this naming of and and the faces on vehicles... I love how Co-Co the caravan has a relaxed, sleepy face :D

Matt, your naming convention is not that much different to how I name my bikes :)

Coco the Caravan's day in the spotlight with rhyme... superb artwork the sleepy face as you mention Jim, barn owl in the tree, a lovely glow of light from the caravan, the two children snug in their beds and the dog curled up in its bed between them in the pencil drawing by the rhyme, the cute little rabbits and the moonlight, the shadows. Totally brilliant totally captivating.

If Matt follows the Citrojim vehicle-naming pathway, all those cars will be fruit & flowers before very long. :-D
