Why did XM have mcpherson struts?

Unlike the previous models and later ones, like the C6, the Citroën BX and XM used a simpler mcpherson strut geometry for its suspension. Was this done to cut cost or why? That seems strange given all the money spent in the XM development, weissach rear axle and so on...
