Gearbox oil

The handbook for my Renault Alpine GTA turbo states Elf TRX 80W API GL5 for the gearbox. Can't seem to get this now so what would be a good substitute? Must it be GL5 or would GL4 be ok? On looking this up I read that GL5 is not suitable for gearboxes!

GL5 is fine for gearboxes that were designed to use it, but gearboxes that were designed for GL4 don't like it.
If you can find which technical standards applied to the original oil, you should be able to find a close equivalent.

You could try the Total (Elf) lube advisor website to see if that covers your car - although the website seems to be barely working for me at the moment.
