Particle filter at risk of clogging

Unread post by Buckborris70 »

Last weekend whilst driving back home from Dorset, the service light lit up on my c4 1.6 hdi with a message saying 'particle filter at risk of clogging'.
After some research I found out that this is to do with the DPF becoming filled with ash, and found a few possible solutions.

To look further into this, I booted up diagbox and found that the particle filter load was indeed showing at 44%

Today I tried adding some dpf cleaner to the fuel tank which supposedly helps to unclog it, and I took a drive up the motorway for 20 minutes and back home again, all the while keeping above 50mph and at least 3000rpm. This apparently gets the exhaust very hot and then burns off the excess ash in the dpf.

After getting home, I hooked up diagbox again and was pleased to see that the particle filter load had now lowered down to 8%. However, when starting up the car I am still getting the service light and error showing 'particle filter at risk of clogging'. I kinda hoped that since the reading is showing the filter load has dropped, it would no longer trigger this error. The only OBDII error I'm seeing is p1351, which was already present before this issue began.

Should this message go away after driving a certain amount of miles? Is there some other way to get rid of it? Any advice appreciated

Check the remaining life of the filter - my guess is you will find it is 0. Check the pressures, if it's around 5 mbar at idle and 40 at 3000 rpm then it should be OK, just tell it you have replaced the DPF, which should put the light out. The filter may be regenning a bit more often, but they usually go on for a good while.
