Xantia V Fiesta service parts costs

I had a shopping spree today,unfortunately it was all my own money,but my daughter's 1.3 Fiesta need's a service & daddy is het for the purchase & as GSF dont do Ford's I had to go to H****r*s as I dont know of any gsf ford equivilants.
For an oil & air filter + an auxiliary drive belt H****r*s took a total of £20.97 for the Fiesta's
For the same parts my local GSF took £10.50, and lets face it Fiesta's are a bit more common than Xantias.
While reading yesterdays"are there any more citroen forums" martyhopkirk seemed to run down mann oil filters & I was wondering if there was something wrong with them cos gsf sold me a mann fuel filter & I dont want to create any problems as the old lady is now up to 200k+,the oil filter this time was meca instead of perflux that I am normaly given, any comments.[?]

When I had a Fraud (had a few) service items actually worked out cheapest from...... Ford.

Surely you must have a Motor Factors near you? I use Partco for a lot of items and small independent motor parts and accessory shop run by an old man! Miles cheaper than Halfords!
Glass fuses from Halfords for my 2CV are £1.10 for 3. From Partco a pack of 10 was less than a pound. I needed a rear fog light for the 2CV. Halfords were £9.99, the old mans shop was only £4.99 for the exact make and model!
I have looked at other service parts for my VW and Halfords are just a joke.

I have used GSF filters and everything they supply for Citroens since they started and I have never had a problem.

I have used gsf filters for the last 6 years,the only doubt I had was martyhopkirk's comment about someone fitting a mann filter to his car during a service & I was just looking for reassurance that there is nothing inherently dodgy about them. now that I think about it there is a partco not that far from gsf[:I]oh well I will remember it for next time[8D]

There are actually very few manufacturers of filters across the world. Fram, Champion, Mann, Motaquip, etc.etc. are all pretty much identical. It's like fuel. Just because the petrol station you've filled up from is say "shell" doesn't mean that the fuel was refined by shell.
There's a filter manufacturing plant somewhere along the M4 corridor that makes most of the air, oil, fuel and cabin filters for the whole of the UK, regardless of brand. Even so-called "genuine" filters will probably be branded something else, and have actually been made by the same machine that makes every other after-market filter available.

I always found parts for the Escort cheap but you don't save anything because you need so many of them.

There are a couple of different group comparisons about oil filters on the net, the one below is most interesting / relavent because it covers filters available in the UK.

All filters are not equal, these are all filters for the same application, the Purflux (Honda) filter seems to be the best in this little group test [;)]

There are other group tests done in the US, and the results they come up with are similar, filters vary in quality, and some brands use different manufacturers interchangably, so one day you buy your favourite brand of filter and its different from the last time you bought the SAME product.

I don't know that one filter is better than another but I tend to associate weight, a solid feel and the appearence of thick filtration with a "good filter". It is possible that, what I think of as, a "good filter" is no better than any other filter.
I usually use Purflux - a good solid filter. Recently I brought a Hengst filter (by mistake) and when I went to fit it - blimy was I surprised. It was half the weight, tinny and thin and inside there didn't appear to be as much filter element.
Now, I'll never know which filter is best at its job; but I know which one I'd rather fit!
