Engine Pinks (Part 2)

Post by petrolhd »

Dear ppl,
I have since changed the cam belt on my 306XR. The engine shows now improvement and still pinks lightly during acceleration most noticible at 2,800 to 3,000 RPM.
I have since supected that the belt is off by a tooth or two but have no way to confirm this as I cannot find the locking holes for the flywheel. Haynes manual suggested inserting a 6mm screw into the backside of the flywheel thru a treaded hole on the engine block but I cannot find any treaded hole. Instead, I found an apreature covered with a removable plastic cover, when removed exposes a hole about 3/4 of an inch which gives a good view of the flywheel.
With the camshaft postion locked, there is no alignment mark or hole on the flywheel when viewed thru the hole. This could be caused by the fact that the valve timing is out and therefore I cannot see any mark / hole on the flywheel. I have turned the flywheel several times by hand to locate the timing marks / holes but with no sucess.
Could anyone help please.
Thanks

On the 1769/1905 Peugeot/Citroen diesels the hole in the block for crankshaft timing is behind the starter motor, you can only see it by using a small mirror on the end of a rod, but because you know it's there it's just a matter of proding around until your probe locates it, you should be able find all timing marks easey enough with the aid of a Haynes manual, they get a bit of a knocking at times but with things like timing they can usualy be relied on.
You can more than likely find top dead centre with a suitable probe through no.1 cylinder plug hole and compare that with the camshaft timing mark.
Good luck

Another thought, there should be a thin metal plate screwed to the bottom quarter of the bell housing, removing this will give a clear view of the back of the flywheel and hence any peg holes.
Have a good one.

Hi Dave,
I managed to locate the opening at the bottom quarter of the bell housing but cannot find any significant peg hole or marking on the back of the flywheel even with piston number 1 at TDC.
I am however begining to speculate the pink is caused by a leak somewhere in the intake manifold but cannot be certain until I confirm the integrity of the cam timing.
After many weekends of troubleshooting,I managed to reduce the pink considerably and it sounds more like light induction noise instead of pinking now, but I feel that the engine is some how still not right.
On Sunday, I will be driving up north to Malaysia, a good 400 kilometres in the hopes of clearing the engine of carbon. Hopefully that will end all my agony.
You have a good weekend.
Cheers,

If you go to this website, you will see photos of a cam belt change on a BX 19Tri which should be fairly similar to your Pug.
Click on the link, scroll right down to the bottom of the menu on LHS of home page and click on "cam belt change" when it loads up.
I think you could be wasting your time looking for a timing mark on your flywheel as if your car is fuel injected, I don't know that one actually exists and in any case it's the position of the camshaft in relation to the crank that is the imortant factor. If it's one tooth out you could be mistaking valves "kissing" pistons lightly for a pinking sound; if it is : scarey stuff!! <img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle>

Trust this is some help.
