X7 Main Suspension Tube Repaired with Cunifer Tube and Fittings - see posts 5th May 2024 onwards

Unread post by Sloppysod »

My C5 has had a serious arterial failure, so much so it will never be able to get up again unaided.
If anyone needs any parts before it gets a Piggy Backed to its final resting place please get in touch
The ”Almost” relates to the main front to rear suspension pipe, it has three holes, one at each end plus another very small one, 4” in from one end.

Apart from normal parts, it has:-
  • Removealable tow hitch, with dedicated Citroen ECU & 13 Pin Electrics
  • Front Parking Sensors complete with Citroen ECU
  • All wheels were re- powder coated in Anthracite Grey last year
  • Front tyres (Devanti DX640 X/L (225/55x17)) only 3000 miles old.
(if Wheels/ tyres are wanted, I will need something to replace them with so the car remains moveable)
  • Rear Center Hydraulic Pipe Replaced in April 2019
  • I would offer the rack, but I don’t really want to take it off, However, I do have a Refurbished short travel rack in the loft of my garage, it was wrongly supplied by Autosteer, Chester.
Note, Front to Rear Pipe New £533, but none available in the UK or anyway to find if it ever will be available anywhere…….. or, I could get a 2nd hand one from France for about £416 plus import duty!

That is tragic. The one on my C5 went and the place I took it to got a new one and a smaller pipe for £95, had to wait for delivery from France - three days.

Sorry to hear that Stu - I take it that link I gave you was the French parts place. This pipe is very long and has multiple twists and turns, which I suspect may be why it's so expensive to make, store & transport.

Such a shame they have not provided ample parts for the vehicles with these systems and pretty shameful of Citroen who seem to want to put these behind them and move on.
Please note, I'm no longer active on the Forum, so won't respond to messages.

Such a shame and if I had the space I would take the whole car. I'm especially upset at the thought of the steering rack and any good hoses/pipes going to scrap.

Is it the saloon or the estate? Which wheels are they? What colour is the vehicle? Where is it situated at the moment?

I think I may have to put this decision on hold for a few weeks.

Who, When?

I was thinking of using a shorter length of pipe and getting an hydraulic company to join it to whats still good on the car!

It would have been about six/seven years ago. Small Polish independent but he is Citroen trained, worked for a big dealer when he first moved here.
I expect that Citroen have stopped supplying these as well as many other parts. I scrapped mine as I couldn't get rams at a reasonable cost, if at all.

I am definitely going to scrap my 2011 C5 Exclusive, as I have tried all possible ways to fix it, apart from importing the part and I don't think I want the hassle. I will probably keep the whole car for a month, so I can use the garage for its replacement.

My Local hydraulics specialist has not seen a flare of that type/size, and apparently 4.5mm diameter seamless tube is not commonly stocked.

The simple answer is No they can't help, but he was interested in what it was for.

See Photos. I have photographed the grazed wheel, all other wheels are good.
Not sure how this will work but, I can store parts for a while, so any suggestions of what I should take off please. [-o<

I know the rack is valuable, but is also a pain to get off, and I'm not sure the scrappy will take it in bits - Unless you want to help get it off

Yes I've seen that one and the OEM version of that pipe is what I fitted in 2019, the pipe that failed goes from the front to the rear, it's about 5 meters long with all sorts of bends and replacing involves exhaust off, Tank off, possibly front sub-frame lowered, and all the underbelly shielding. :dunno:

Stu - PM me your mobile number, I've got a few thousand miles on home brew fittings on our C5 that have replaced this same pipe, I have some on the shelf.

Stu, I've whatsapped you some pics of the cuni replacement I made for mine, but I'll go into more detail here as I didn't want to be disturbing you at this hour of night. Long story short, I designed, and had fittings CNC machined out of stainless, I've sourced high pressure cuni pipe, and developed a "system" of pipe and fittings that allow any mechanic with a normal brake pipe flaring to make a pipe to replace these LDS pipes:

Basically you screw in one of my fittings, which converts the citroen LDS port to a normal brake pipe male:

Then use one of my bespoke tube nuts on my pipe, flare it with any brake flaring tool, repeat the same at the other end, and set about bleeding your hydraulics. The special designed nuts have an internal shoulder to really clamp down on the flare:

I bypassed the fuel tank on mine, running the pipe over the cross-member, hard right:

Around the subframe mount towards the rear right arch, then back inboard to reunite with the original pipe forward of the tank:

The result is cunifer piping replacing the steel pipe:

£100 posted for the pipe, fittings, p-clips for the detour, and it saves your car.
