estimated bhp

a bit of a story so bare with me.ive a 95 zx 3 dr 1.9 td volcane, with the usual easy diy mods that the tuners charge £££ for.(done by myself for nought)little boy racer starts to get a bit eager today in his big black mg zr with big bodykit, lowered to the floor ,big stainless exhaust, whaap, whaaap, whaaap comeing from his engine bay.(you no the sort) so me being me,(not too easily shall we say, being wound up) NOT, but he succeded.so up the road we went.long straight road.i left him for s..t!now im not one to bum and blow but i pulled 3 or 4 cars from him from a standing start off a roundabout, think he gave up about 60/70 or so as i rattled on to fill the clock.now, the story goes,he actually flashed me in (to the side of the road) and asked me quote "what the f..k engine is in that" and i replied with a really smirk grin,ITS A DIESEL MATE. you should have seen this little bum fluff type 17 year old face, with his spikey blond hair!![:D],any way he told me his had a full powerflow stainless exhaust and a 57i induction kit.he was well impressed!i did a quick google and came up with 105bhp standard.so with his exhaust, and k.n i would say 110/115bhp.so if i pulled that much on him what do you think?we have very few rolling roads here in n.ireland but would really like to get a session booked after todays events.im running 18psi.ps im in my mid 30s so have grown out of the boy racer thing.just looking for some opinions

A Rover? You could have got out and walked, and still beat him. The 1.8 MG ZR is supposed to have 120bhp. Being a kid he probably had the 103bhp 1.4 though. I've driven the 1.8 and didn't think much of it - my Xantia's down on bhp compared to it, and still felt like it had more oomph. What's the volcane got as a matter of interest? 90-95?
"All show, no go" would sum those things up pretty well...[:o)]

at the end of the day its the torque in the deisel that will propel it not the bhp, And the td's have always had masses of torque! also the ickle 1.4 with the factory kit and big wheels istn going to be sporty! (the zt180 doest pull anything on my bx!) but there is no denying the amusement on slaughtering the lad who thinks he is fastest on the road!
i have always likedthe zx volcane td and looked for one when i got the bx but there wasnt any about at the time!
i would have thought that your zx may be running about 150lbft?????

The 1.8vvc ZR does have 160 bhp which is not to be sneezed at..
Torque-wise I remember the Rover 25 diesel (101bhp) being quicker 50-70 than the 145bhp Rover 25 Gti. Shows what impact torque makes!

Torque does have a huge effect. Peugeot used to brag a bit about the 405 1.9TD being faster 50-70 (in 5th) than a Mondeo 2.0i
Annoying boy racers in a "nothing" car is really lots of fun isn't it. Years ago I modified a 1.9TD 405 with about 22psi and a front intercooler. It would eat most things for breakfast. What I found most amusing was that it was a tatty estate, on steel wheels. Brilliant.

I remember seeing about 10 years ago in a VW magazine, a guy had put a Polo G40 engine (1.3 supercharged) into a totally standard looking polo- the saloon one. If you think about 1988 E reg thats the shape Im talking about. Complete with standard wheel trims etc. Bet that suprised a few at the lights!

Beating boy racers away from the lights isn't all about power, a lot of it comes down to technique. TDs are pretty easy to get going quickly because they aren't peaky. I remember racing a BMW 330ci away from traffic lights once, I managed to get about a cars length ahead of the BMW but in the next 5 or 6 car lengths he'd got himself a cars length ahead of me, technique only gets you so far...

I can comfirm that.In `99 i had a brand new 200 Vi VVC 145 bhp.Great car,plenty of omph,screemer of an engine.After 6 mths i got a brand new 200 IS TD 1O5 bhp(long story).Not as quick to 60 mph,but faster when left in 4th or 5th gear.Confirmed in the broucher as well.I think 40-60 in 4th & 50-70 in 5th,the TD was about 2-3 secs quicker.
Still liked the Vi better though![:)]

A plain N/A 1.9D ZX? Not much apart from a K&N air filter, and that isn't going to give you much. If you want something more than a "leisurely" drive, get a 1.9TD.
You could get a stanley knife and cut out a patch of carpet under the accelerator pedal. [:D] There's always a bit of power left in that 1.9D when you bury the pedal right into the floor...

I confirm what Ross has sain about tuning the ZX 1.9D engine. In fact although it and the turbo look superficially similar the TD is stronger all the way through. That doesn't mean that the D is weak - there are examples that have done huge mileages with total reliability - just that it functions very nicely as it is but you can't just bolt a turbocharger on it.
Certainly if ours is anything to go by it does actually go very well and can be driven all day at high speeds with no sign of distress at all. As the car corners nicely it will cover the ground very rapidly but if overtaking up mororway hills is your thing - forget it.
Overall a very nice comfortable car thats quite fun but just not as much fun as a TD BX.

I wish they had speed cameras on every set of lights to catch you people.
The cheek of calling someone a boy racer at the same time as 'racing' them away from a set of traffic lights. Just because you are over 25 doesn't mean you cant be a boy racer. In fact the greatest boy racer I have ever heard about is that idiot Jeremy Clarkson.
The road is for going places and shouldn't be abused in such a selfish manner.

Explain why he is abusing the roads, the way i see it is he's a male with testosterone, a car and a like minded person beside him at the lights. Its only natural for him to want to have a bit of a race, its the competitve urge, if he doesnt he has too much estrogen in his blood and would be more interested in if his shoes matched the rest of his outfit and making sure kids were wraped up in cotton wool
What he's done is hardly a serious crime, and i'm pretty sure 99.9% of people on here have done something similar at one time or another, hell i even know a 45 year old police man who's about the biggest 'Boy Racer' i've ever met.
And your only calling Jeremy Clarkson a idiot because he has one of the best jobs in the world....

Oh come on, we've all done silly stuff on the roads from time to time. Sure enough, speeding gets the bad press these days, but I've got plenty of older work colleagues who tell me of the fun they had getting drunk and racing each other back in the days when drink driving was a socially acceptable thing to do. [}:)]
I take my hat off to anyone who has never exceeded the speed limit, but on a car enthusiast's forum I think I could be waiting a while to find such a well-disciplined person. [:0]
