As mentioned elsewhere I took my Legacy back to the dealer for the console light issue today and left them at 08.30 in the loan car described here. As I was arriving back in Hertford at 09.35 the dealer called me to say the car was ready and I could collect it anytime during the rest of the day. SWMBO fancied going out for lunch so I suggested we have a cupper and then drive back to Cambridge collect my car and find somewhere on the way home for lunch. We carried out that plan but heading north we saw a mega traffic jam coming south on the A10 so I said I'd find another route home through some villages and we may find a pub en route. The weather was grim so the original idea to have lunch in Cambridge went out the window and we set off down the roads between the A10 and M11 and found ourselves in a cracking place for lunch: The Cricketers in Clavering:

A thoroughly decent lunch was enjoyed with the great real fire aroma and hum of people politely enjoying their food. If you are in the area I fully recommend it and they do offer accommodation too if you fancy a nice weekend away!!

Now demolished but did see the sign on the television this morning, in quite an appropriate location. So I have elevated it to pub of the day.

Further information welcomed if anyone fancies a delve.

The Herald

A pub with rich history as it was named after the Triumph Herald motor car which was first manufactured in 1959 at the nearby Standard factory.

It opened in 1964, closed in 2010 and was demolished the next year.

There probably is a corner of the net which covers most things and
The Definitive Guide to the History of Pubs and Beerhouses in Coventry
-Drinking in an Old English Town

is one such place. Here's the link https://pubhistory.historiccoventry.co.uk/
Of interest is our Pub of the Day...The Herald on Sir Henry Parkes Road, now demolished of course and of no particular architectural note apart from a circular lounge called the Pennant after one of the vehicles produced at the Standard Factory across the Railway from the pub. It does have a little bit of interesting history, which is covered on this page here
and if you visit Lubenham a village outside Market Harborough, a small piece of it is preserved at the Triumph Sports Six Club HQ.

Anybody who is looking for a B&B in the Newark area could consider The Lions at 55 London Road. We (two of my cousins and myself) stayed there recently, and I would describe it as a lovely home where there are (up to) three rooms available. Glorious old house with well thought out interior decoration, run by a couple of middle aged gentlemen (John and Pablo), with a couple of cats (who are timid), a lovely back garden, and a decent choice of breakfast. We had an evening meal just up the road at The Oscar Inn (in tribute to Oscar Wilde), about 5 minutes walk.

In a garages Gallery revisit today looking for the Two Wrestlers, I came across a post of the garage next to this pub.
With the coincidental posting of Pete the Pigeon by Mick on POTD this had to be Pub of the Day on this thread. :-D
The Wood Pigeon Wormley Surrey

I like a decent name, and there aren't many called the Woodpigeon (none actually). The photo is from Geograph and taken in 1977. Surprisingly, from the general ambiance of the photo, the pub remained in business until it inevitably closed in 2007, and flats took its place.

As it is now
There is a small bit of anecdotal information on it on "the lost pubs project"
https://www.closedpubs.co.uk/surrey/wor ... igeon.html

The Wood Pigeon was situated on Station Approach. This pub closed in 2007 and has now been converted to flats.
As it is now
I used to walk down my nextdoor neighbours garden, over a railway bridge through the station car park and into the pub. It was popular with commuters, but of a lunchtime you might well find the famous WWII Polish fighter pilot become artist, Stefan Knapp who lived and worked a short walk away in Sandhills.
Nicholas Mawer (January 2020)
I used to work at the now long-gone Institute of Oceanographic Sciences on Brook Road, across the station footbridge and up the lane from the pub. This was a regular lunchtime and post-work venue for a few good pints of Abbot Ale before before getting the train home to Haslemere. John Murray 1988/1995

I'm guessing very few viewers actually clicked on the link and watched the nostalgic film of "The Trout" in the sixties.
Few little gems within, but in general today has been a Harry day, one appearing on unexpectedly on the Parking Tales Thread, and the other actually having a steak in the Trout in 1963.

What a sombre looking bunch, do they work for a funeral director? :) Nice music though....................spoiled by my neighbours visitors, a crew drilling holes in the wall to install a new gas boiler.
