Random burning smell from a 207 with a TU3A engine?

My wife's 207 is running lovely with the exception of a very random burning smell that is really strong and comes and goes.

It smells like a burning clutch but the clutch is not slipping at all and was changed about 40k miles ago with an LUK one. The burning smell seems to have started since my wife drove through some deep flood water at the end of last year but it could be a coincidence. The engine is not burning any oil or using any water. I have been under the car quite a few times checking for engine and gearbox oil leaks but there is nothing. I am unable to check the gearbox oil level due to Peugeot not providing a oil level plug but there are no obvious leaks anyway.

The smell can happen at anytime - stuck in slow traffic, after a good run, hot weather, cold weather, etc. At the end of last year, the car was being occasionally problematic getting it into gear I oiled the cables and that seems to be a bit better now though - this is all I can think of that could indicate when the trouble is.

Has anyone else come across this problem before with these engines/cars?

Have you checked the exhaust ? If like the one on our 2003 1.4 C3 there is a joint with a gasket in that can leak over time. It is where the front and middle sections join and has spring loaded bolts.

For anyone else having the same problem, you might like to have a read of this thread. I have not had chance to check this on mine yet but it seems to be a possible root of my problems - small drips of oil on the exhaust!
