C5 2.2 hdi broken timing belt

Post by Scroggy 2024 »

I stripped the teeth on 2.2 hdi c5 x7 202hp
New belt on and timed up
Won’t start
Have stripped top of engine and got injectors out
Removed plastic bit of rocker cover but can’t get remaining rocker cover off
See one broken rocker
Not sure if I need to take plastic inlet manifold off. Top half of inlet manifold is bolted to rocker cover and I have these bolts backed out
Looks like a lot of work to take inlet manifold off
Any body familiar with this set up
Car is too good to scrap

Bit of an update
Rocker cover now off
All exhaust rockers smashed or bent/cracked
Inlet seem ok
Haven’t taken cams off
Have full set of rockers from mk 2 c5 2.0 hdi 138 hp scrapper
Look very similar but not identical
Wondering if they are suitable
Have seen advertisements on eBay for rockers that suit both cars

Maybe somebody knows if they are the same part number for both engines

Dont know about part numbers but afaik they will be functionaly the same. These engines have vertical valves so the valve heads are unlikely to have got bent over in the 'event' and the rockers are intentionaly sacrificiial so potentialy the situation is good. Important ! The camshafts are not cast as one piece, the lobes are heat shrunk/pressed on to the shaft, examine carefully, if any of the lobes have moved even slightly chuck not fix !!
Hope all goes well.

Thanks for the reply
Will check cam lobes
Put rubber bung on airline blow gun and placed it down injector sockets
3 cylinders seem to have very good air tightness
Very slight leak from cylinder 3 can be herd thru in let manifold but is will hold compression and try and blow bung out
Measured top of valve distance from top of head and mostly +\~ 0.3 mm difference between valves
Hoping valves ok
Where could I find how to time engine ?
Should I replace chain chain between two cams
I am a novice with engines but like to have ago .

Also remove the camshaft pulley & check the woodruff key, its quite common for the newer HDi's to shear it (and also sometimes damage the camshaft). It can go unnoticed till you try to set the timing.
The early HDi's often just broke the rockers & that was it, just replace rockers after fishing out all the needle rollers with a magnet, new timing belt & job done.
Unfortunately i have found the newer HDi's less forgiving after a timing belt failure, often damaging the camshafts & still bending valves even with broken rockers.

Fitted eight new rockers
Not sure how to time engine from scratch
Have 8 mm drill bit through hole behind starter motor locking flywheel
Cylinder 1 4 seem to be tdc
Should I rotate cam shaft to point were point were I can put 8mm bolt through cam sprocket into block
When these two are lined up does that mean it’s timed ?

Bit of an update
Got all screwed back together today
New copper washers on injectors
16 new rockers
Started on 4 th attempt of cranking for 10 secs
Absolutely delighted
Only issue I see is a bit of blow by on an injector
