terrible picture due to zooming in on a phone camera. But seeing a rainbow around the moon looks so nice.

We then headed to The Snares Islands - so called as they were likely to trap unwary ships. There is prodigious amounts of wildlife, as the steep cliffs meant it wasn't suitable for sealers/whalers, or for farmers with livestock.

These islands have their own species of penguin, and provide a safe nesting site for many species of sea birds, including at least 3 species of albatross.

They travel inland to their burrows, at times tobogganing on their stomachs and getting muddy, but a quick swim in seal-infested waters soon has them clean again.

CitroJim should take note of that. He could use that method to clean off after a particularly muddy run. :)

Here's a gratuitous seal or two - don't look like vicious penguin killers do they (actually pretty sure these guys are pescatarian- although sealions might be another matter). Both photos from locations adjacent to the penguins.

I love penguins :D I'm no animal lover but do like a few species of characterful birds... Penguins are definitely that...

Took some of our grandkids to Zig-Zag Railway near Lithgow today - we kept it a surprise and the whole day was a rip-roaring success. Zig-Zag is a bit like the Watercress Line - a segment of old railway running a steam locomotive to pull some suitably aged carriages.

Here's a couple of pix to give you a flavour:

Have driven from Cairns to Kuranda, and admired the parts of the railway that can be seen without actually catching the train (I remember we walked down to a station) - but have to confess I haven't actually taken the train. OTOH, none of my children or grandchildren live outside the NSW borders, so the motivation is relatively low...

Feeding birds on the verandah - grandkids very excited, but tend to chase the birds away. This white cockatoo is a regular, and usually puts on a display of his crest.
