I'm sorry I disagree profoundly with your attitude towards your mother in law. It's disrespectful and passive aggressive with your language. It's not humorous friendly, it shows a bad attitude.

Your mil is probably taking it all with a smile as she loves her daughter and wants to support her. You need to look at your language and relationships very closely. Being proud of being able to say this kind of thing shows there's something very wrong here.

Car life.

There has been a lot of talk around regarding how long a car will last, mainly referring to the typical 8 year garranteed battery life of Electric Vehicles.

I was speaking to a parts person in my local Peugeot dealer and, 1st of all the part I was after was no longer available. Then during the conversation he said, typically any part in his "parts bins" for a car (read model) that has been out of production for more than 6 years is dumped and getting parts for cars older than 6 years is very hit and miss.I don't think this is unique to Peugeot either.

So, we can probably assume that manufacturers plan to support all car including EV's upto 8 years, then your are on your own.

I know some makes will supply parts on special order they make them when asked, like Mercedes, but typically old cars, like most of what we have amongst us, a car older than 10 years will be rare soon. If you can't afford a new (ish) car, and you won't be able to get spares for you current car, you will become a non owner/driver.

Are the car manufacturers killing the demand and pushing the less welloff to use public transport - YES.

It's not just vehicles, other products are being unsupported earlier than previously done so.

They don't actually 'dump' the out of date stuff they sell it on at cost or below to independent garages who deal mainly in the same make and to some companies who specialise in that stuff.

The statistic is that the average age of a car on the road in the UK is actually now about 10 years old - this has changed in the last year or two and may be an anomallly due to COVID related factors or other nuances. But to get to an average of 10 years old means - variously, for every 6 year old car there is a 14 year old car.... but there'll probably be more 6 year old cars out there than 14 year old cars, so it gets a bit involved
The actual average age of cars on the road will, effectively, come down to one thing - market forces, or more accurately, what the motoring public will put up with. Manufacturers will play with these market forces and can have an effect on them - price reductions, new gizmos, deals for fleet buyers, playing on customers insecurities : "Buy our new car and you'll feel better about yourself and be the envy of the street" etc, etc.
It is no manufacturer's benefit to make a car that will last forever - SAAB had a go at making good old reliable cars and look what happened to them
In the end, they are in business to make money.

To add to Gibbo's point, whilst the majority of 'old' stock is probably resold, there are plenty of instances of manufacturers / main dealers skipping old stock rather than reselling it - probably in the interests of preserving market value. I've certainly read of old Merc stock being skipped in bulk.

Just had the quote to repair, Just over 17000.00. It is going to the scrapyard in the sky, Not yet decided on a replacement.
Plenty of spares on it for anyone interested. 2.0 hdi 2013 LHD, No rust anywhere, 4 good wheels and brand new tyres on it, Currently at Marshalls Mercedes crash repair centre in Blackpool, I presume they will be disposing of it when I accept the insurance offer

Regarding getting parts for older vehicles, if they are a bit old...15 to 20, it depends on the make and model. That's why I run French cars in France. The French generally run French. Therefore, parts for my 407 are available albeit the scrapper if not OEM. It really depends on whether you do the work yourself also. No mechanic will go to the scrapper to find a part and if they do it wouldn't be economically viable to pay them to do it. Once you go older still the make and model really makes a difference. I can get repop parts for my 40 year old Kwaks, they are collectable so it's worth the investment for aftermarket manufacturers to make them. Some parts are nearly impossible to find. Hen's teeth would be easier. End of the day you have to have a few quid or do the work yourself. Certain makes and models, that weren't popular are for the bin after 10 years

Good thinking Pete! Here in the UK, parts for some cars are very easy to source, the Mini, Soggy Moggy and MGB, amongst others, are so good you can still buy all the bits to build an entirely new car should your wallet allow.

Same with Aston Martins...

I was only fiddling around with it and have no intention of using the radio and no intention of wasting time 'fixing' it. Much prefer canned music using my phone as an mp3 player when I can get it connected.
Literally nothing on the radio or TV that I would make any effort to see or hear.

I still think the problem is more my ineptitude with the radio more than anything.

Same with the TV. A couple of weeks ago I noticed four buttons on my TV remote that I couldn't recall seeing previously. No legend on them either, just different colours.
Turned the TV on and poked the buttons, only one worked, brought up the 'red button' menu although it wasn't the red button.
Have heard of this but never explored it.

I thought later that it could have been for teletext. Oh well!

Just for completeness Steve, the four coloured buttons on most TV remotes are to provide options for you to select when looking at menus. The options will be offered by the menu and you choose the colour that corresponds to the selection you want eg in Settings menu you might find "For auto power down after no activity 1 hour press yellow, 2 hours press blue, 3 hours press green" etc..

Nothing I would ever use then.
I only play DVDs on it and although I am always there when they finish it will automatically shut down when the DVD finishes, it shuts the DVD player down too.

But as said, three of them did nothing. May have to look deeper. One day.

It is quite old, fifteen years ore more and has no options for streaming so although I am continually nagged to get Netflix or Amazon Prime I have no desire to nor the capability of using them.

I buy used DVDs mainly from Music Magpie, cost bugger all and should I be moved to do so can watch them again any time I like.
Revently got "Picnick at Hanging Rock" for £1.60, haven't seen it since the early eighties but remember liking it. May watch it one day (big pile of unwatched DVDs, some have been here over a decade)

Historically, those coloured buttons originate from the days of Teletext (BBC Ceefax and whatever the ITV version was called) and used for navigating around those services.

Steve, you're not missing anything, there's less and less of any real value and enjoyment on the radio now. Potentially reasonable commercial stations are ruined by adverts and the BBC is rapidly going down the drain. The end of last week saw yet another contraction of BBC Local Radio programming with the loss of a much-loved early morning show.
