EGR valve - Disconnect?

Post by lesnajair »

Hi All
Is it best to disconnect this or leave it alone?
The reason I ask is because I have been getting poor performance, eg. decrease in mpg and poor acceleration, lack of power.
Would this help my symptoms or am I looking at the wrong remedy?
Any advice is always greatly appreciated.

On any car, best to disconnect it, except for MOT time.
I had a 406 2.1td and the inlet manifold was caked in gunk and I was told it was due to the EGR system. I disconnected mine and cleaned out the inlet manifold a) by hand and b) with 10K boost and the car was much better.

Do you have to take the manifold off to clean it or can it be cleaned succesfully in situ?

On the 2.1td, the manifold is in 2 halves, a plastic top half which can easily be removed and cleaned and the alloy bottom half, which can't. For that I used a can of 10K boost. This is some stuff that does the job of injector cleaner, but for the air inlet tracts of a car. On very gunked up cars, that have done loads of town driving etc, it can work wonders. It probably didn't do much for my car as I thrashed it anyway and cleaned deposits out that way. Shouldn't do any harm though. You spray it into the inlet pipe after the air cleaner whilst revving the engine. You shoudl see clouds of smoke come out of the exhaust (so don't do it in your neighbourhood!) and hopefully, black soot.
