Believe me, paper cuts are the worst. I got a load when I was engaged in a marathon shredding session a while back. They go deep, hurt and take ages to heal

Calling all bods who know about such things !

Some time ago I was given an old small genset in a non-working condition. It dates from 1969-71 -ish. The engine is an old Honda G40 - these were the early days of the small, ubiquitous, portable Honda engines, unfortunately the engine is a bit past it. The design of the genny is that it is belt driven rather than direct coupled like modern ones so that means I can just drop in a spare engine to make it work.
However....... when I looked into the genny control gubbins I hesitated.

Can anyone who knows about such things have a look at the various electronic bits in the picture and comment on what they think i.e. 'Wouldn't touch that with a barge pole', 'No problem, easy to check and easy to replace u/s bits', 'That'll go bang as soon as you make power' etc, etc.

I don't actually need another genny as I have a few already but I thought it might be fun to get this one going, and I have suitable engines for it sitting in the shed.

I see nothing frightening in there Robin... Check the two capacitors are OK, especially the electrolytic and that the bridge rectifier is good (i.e. no shorted diodes).

The generator looks as if it will be self-exciting using residual field magnetism and some of its output is rectified and more or less manually regulated via the front panel voltage control rheostat to give the required DC voltage to the field coils to give approximately the right AC voltage out.

It won't be terribly well regulated vs. varying loads so hence the manual adjustment! It'll be a bit rough and ready but ideal for powering non-critical stuff...

In truth, so little to go wrong there and if there is, easy to fix... That electrolytic is the bit most likely to keel over but going by the pictures it doesn't look too distressed.

That's very reassuring, Jim, thanks for the info. I think I'll replace the 2 crapacitors as a matter of course...... providing they're not silly money.

I wouldn't bother to change the capacitors unless they test faulty, either open, short or leaky, Robin. Or the electrolytic looks about to spill its innards.

Also, the one that's in an oval case looks like a motor-run or motor-start capacitor and is a special type. It must be replaced by a compatible item and not just any old capacitor. These, in particular, are usually reliable. It's electrolytics that give most trouble.
