Try reducing the exposure - the moon is a very bright object and is easy to overexpose unless the camera is capable of spot metering. You don't need a tripod to get a good moon photo, as it's bright enough to allow for a "fast enough" shutter speed, and one way of reducing exposure is of course to increase shutter speed!
It may be necessary to switch to manual, but most cameras provide an "exposure compensation" control. You may find you need to reduce exposure by as much as 2 stops. That's how I got the detail of light and shade on my moon photo from October.
Re. the "Beaver moon" (all these names such as "Harvest Moon etc." are of course American inventions) - the official time for full moon in the UK was 9:16 am on Nov 27th. Yes that's after moonset - weird huh? Effectively it means that it was full on the night of the 26th and the early hours of the 27th, and would still appear full to anyone but an astronomer on the night of the 27th.
Cheers

Re: Picture(s) of the day....
Thanks Alec, the camera I uses is a Sony Cyber Shot DSC-W810 up to 20.1 megapixels. It suits the photography I do, but no direct control over exposure times, more a point and shoot camera with a lot of auto functions. I'm pretty happy with what comes out and I enjoy a bit of arty playing around using this https://www.imgonline.com.ua/eng/posterization.php .
This used the chalk drawing option for one of my other moonshots tonight

Well Neil, I think you're a lot more creative than me - that's a very interesting image! Sort of reminds me of an aerial view of an oasis among sand dunes. And I understand your aim is to encourage participation first, so that everyone feels comfortable contributing, so minimising technology chat.NewcastleFalcon wrote: 28 Nov 2023, 22:29 Thanks Alec, the camera I uses is a Sony Cyber Shot DSC-W810 up to 20.1 megapixels. Your camera looks like a very versatile piece of kit, and 20 megapixel means it's pretty good quality. I see it also has image stabilisation/auto shake. My camera is also a Sony Cyber-Shot, also about 20 Mp. It has a bit more zoom, but the trade-off is more weight to carry around. I think we both use cameras, rather than phones, because we want to retain a bit of creative control!
The good news is that, perhaps hidden in the menus of your camera, are the very features I was suggesting might give you more creative in certain circumstances - see excerpt from spec sheet below. The bad news is that the manual - at least what's available online - would have to be among the most useless I've ever struck. Looks like anyone wanting to explore the extended capabilities of your camera is pretty much on their own!

Two for the price of one today, and making up for my lack of contributions recently...
I've been out this morning for a bit of exercise and rehab...
Continuing the moon theme:
And daybreak over Paggers, taken just above the Iron Bridge

Re: Picture(s) of the day....
Thanks for the tips Alec, as with a lot of things the camera is capable of doing many things I have never tried yet even though I have used it and its virtually identical predecessor for many years.Armidillo wrote: 29 Nov 2023, 06:08 And I understand your aim is to encourage participation first, so that everyone feels comfortable contributing, so minimising technology chat.
Quite a few members like a bit of tech chat as the pages of many FCF threads testify, so no inhibitions on that score, as ever participation is the trump card for me

Nice one Matt....this time of year when the first snow arrives I like to revive and pay homage to one of the traditional FCF threads, Gibbo's trademark quirkily titled...

Re: Picture(s) of the day....
Same with mine (Olympus E-500) the manual is several hundred pages of intricacy and I can rarely remember the necessary incantations. Same with the bloody Nikon and even the little Fuji.NewcastleFalcon wrote: 29 Nov 2023, 09:15 Thanks for the tips Alec, as with a lot of things the camera is capable of doing many things I have never tried yet even though I have used it and its virtually identical predecessor for many years.
Not to mention the bloody phone, has a life of its own.
Some snow here but not worthy of a photo.

Re: Picture(s) of the day....
Not as much today as on my previous post to Snow Good on March 31st 2023. Last winter had virtually nothing in terms of snow between the end of November 28th 2022 and March 31st. 2023 round these parts.
