Citroen ZX full steering & accelerate sound

Unread post by pancho »

Hello everybody
I have a problem with my ZX Advantage (1993) when full steering (to the right) and accelerate. If I fully steer wheels to the right and try to accelerate I hear a continuous clicking sound from the front right wheel. They told me that I need to replace the right Driveshaft which already changed 1.000 km ago. I would like also to notice that this sound appears even when parking-unparking, even when driving.
Does anyone have any idea about this problem. The right Driveshaft is as I told you almost brand new (1.000 km) and I suspect that is not the only reason for that sound
Thanks

Silly suggestion, but are the wheel bolts tight? Any wheel trims loose? the inner arch isnt rubbing anywhere on the wheel/tyre? Finnaly, is the driveshaft ok - is there any play in it?

Thanks wilkobob for the instant reply [:)],
Well about the wheel bolts and trims I can tell you for sure that they are ok. Now about the inner right arch, from the first check I made seems also ok. It does not touches the wheel or the tyre. The driveshaft has been replaced two weeks ago (1.000 kms) and I it was brand new as I saw it when being replaced (I was over mechanics shoulder during replacement.)A friend of mine told me that ZXs have very sensitive driveshafts but I think it's silly to change driveshafts every 2.000 kms. I would like also to notice that this happens only when accelerating and not when rolling, so I suspect is a transmission problem and not a misplaced arch cover and/or tyre/wheel.

I wonder if its a driveshaft installation problem and for example the bellows catches on something when the wheel is turned. Had this with a new GKN shaft on my BX TD and the bellows got caught in the airscoop (professionally fitted!) Mind you thats making noises like a dud joint now - tomorrows job to investigate.

Well Jeremy as I am not an expert I must have the car checked by another mechanic for faulty driveshaft installation. I just called a Citroen Service here in Athens and asked about this problem. They told me by phone that this happened because I changed only one driveshaft and not both of them and this results in different wearing in the two driveshafts. They advised me to change both driveshafts (400 Euros) but I think that they only want my money. [;)]

It does sound suspicious that the driveshaft has been replaced recently and a noise has occured.....always assume a previous job

A driveshaft will only make noises when its worn and its common for them not to fail at the same time. To make a noise on turning the wheel to lock suggests some degree of wear so the first thing to do is to find out which shaft it is (get someone else to drive while you stand besides and listen.)

Well that's my latest update.
I took ZX to a mechanic and after checking it he found out that I have to change the shock absorbers. That cost me 450 Euros. He checked the driveshafts and he found that they haven't any problem. After that I took the car and now the noise happens not only when cornering but also when I am going straight ahead [:(!][:(!][:(!].
After searching the whole forum again I found this topic :
http://www.andyspares.com/discussionfor ... IC_ID=5824
which describes better the problem (as I think that my English are not so good).
I am desperate....
