Hi, my 2013 Citroën DS5 intermittently makes a knocking noise which seems to come from the left front wheel/suspension area. I have had it examined at a wheel and shock place which tightened something but the problem persists. The noise does not seem to be caused by bumps but rather appears when I’m driving at constant speed, neither accelerating nor breaking. Some bumps can bring on the noise but it is not consistent. During acceleration and breaking I don’t hear the noise. I have not been able to reproduce the noise while the car is stationary.
Any suggestions on what the problem could be or how to diagnose this?

Re: DS5 knocking noise
Possibilities can include worn suspension/drop link joints, brake pads needing a clean, wear in the strut top mounting, loose bolts, wear in a shock absorber - we had this on a 2015 C4 and with the shock absorber off the car the chrome shaft could be moved sideways and make a metallic knock but on the car it was not easy to detect.

Re: DS5 knocking noise
I had the same thing on my 2015 ds5.
Needed a new shock and the rubber mount bush at the top had a split in it.
Shock seemed OK when removed but had sidways play in the shaft when swinging on it like a 1 armed bandit.
It only knocked when going over light rumbling bumps such as rumble strips or poor road repairs, was fine over speed ramps etc.
Annoyingly, I know it was a huge pot hole that caught me out that caused it, was like hitting a kerb head on at 40mph, ouch

Re: DS5 knocking noise
Forgot to add, there was a slight "squeaking" noise from the affected side when turning the wheel in that direction for parking manoeuvres which has since gone after the shock/rubber mount replacement

Re: DS5 knocking noise
I had a clunk within the steering column. If this is it then it will only happen while you're turning the steering and you'll feel it through your hands.
I fixed mine for £0.00. Found it was the telescopic adjustment, behind the pull-off panel in front of your knees. It's a rod within a tube, and it was waggling at the top of the tube part. There are bent over bits of metal pressing against a nylon ring that should grip it, I gave each of them a firm tap with a screwdriver and hammer to tighten everything up, all perfect ever since.
