Peugeot 208 , 1.2 l broke down

Unread post by Marv83 »

Hey there car enthusiasts,

I'm reaching out for some much-needed help. Yesterday, I picked up my Peugeot 208 from the Peugeot garage after a major service and timing belt replacement. It's a 2019 registration with a 1.2l petrol engine and 44000 miles on the clock. Unfortunately, just three minutes after leaving the garage, my car broke down. I heard a clicking noise, lost acceleration, and received battery fault and high temperature alerts. Since the garage was closed, I had to call for recovery, and they dropped off the car at my home address.

This morning, upon inspection, I noticed that the alternator driving belt is missing. There seems to be a broken belt next to it, but I'm unsure of its purpose. Additionally, I observed that an electric cable has been cut at the bottom(red and green cable on the picture) , and I'm not sure what it's for. Interestingly, I received a full health report check from the garage yesterday, and there were no signs of wear and tear on the alternator driving belt.

I strongly believe that the garage may have made a mistake, possibly during the reinstallation of the alternator belt if it had to be removed for the timing belt replacement. I'm also quite certain that they didn't conduct a safety test on my car after the repair.

Could someone please take a look at the picture I've attached and share your thoughts on the damages? I'm particularly interested in knowing what the second broken belt is and whether I can hold the garage responsible for these issues, considering the full health report showed no faults.

I must admit, my knowledge of cars is quite limited, so any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much!

At a guess I would say the AUX belt comes off for the cambelt change, I would say they either over tensioned the belt or didn't tension it all, maybe forget to tighten the tensioner, the cable look ok you can't see copper so it is just the sheathing that's come adrift. Battery light would come on as alternator has stopped turning due to the broken belt.
I personally would be on to the Garage Monday morning as soon as they are open, telling them what has happened on the way home after the "repair", even of they blame a dodgy AUX belt I would still moan as they should of told you before putting it back on if it was that bad.
