Sally the (Somerset) Saxo
After a few years living in Newport Pagnell little Sally has returned to her home ground of Somerset. Avalon Citroen in Glastonbury first supplied it.
I originally found the car in Somerton some 5+ years ago as a "get back into spannering" car for a very good friend, it provided light work without stress and was also ideal being small and able to carry push bikes (worth about 15x that of the cars purchase price !) as well as any short shopping trips required......The Saxo served well, did its job without complaint.
Some time in its life it has mounted a rock or something as the rear right sill had a slight "push" under it, this slightly distorted it at the very rear resulting in the very lower edge of the wing splitting the seal-sealer.....thus letting water enter the rear part of the sill. The result was first noticed and I recived a ___" Alasdair, there are a couple of small bubbles down here, ?? can you sand them off and repaint ?".....well YES I said, so investigated with a thin screw driver, OUCH !............that never ends well.
The result was that Sally the SAXO was going to be binned and replaced by some modern crap ! (:) )....which happened rather quickly, the offer of Scrap it or you can take it back was accepted !
Little white Citroens are like Boomerangs !
On receiving the Saxo I cut away the rotten metal, which as always gets bigger that first thought !....bugger !....but at least it became obvious why there was a problem in this area and it was not "general rot". So I made the required patches and set about welding in the section needed......this was quite hard as the sill "flairs out" and needed some hard (for me) metal shaping to replicate the curves as well as the lower edge fold...I wanted to make the part in one piece for strength/rust resistance....silly me !)
BUT....there is always a bleeding BUT !....whilst under the car I investigated another small patch !....awww BUGGER it ! This was the result of the same grounding incident I think as there were scrapes through the thick underseal coating used in the factory.......this had let water touch the metal and creep under this layer, it just pealed off revealing the above horror.
So, I cut away and cut away.................. then cut away some more......and ended up with this ! So new parts made and welded in. I did the box section first then over that the "holed section" which I copied from the parts I cut out. Getting there
Source for the metal I used....the remains of a XM's rear wing !.....so I have a XmAxo ?

Re: Sally the (Somerset) Saxo
I've heard about cars in Newport Pagnell, generally go to rust at some point just for fun!! Oh, that's the ones that used to be made there!!
Still looks like Sally is well and truly on the road to resurrection, nice work Alasdair!1
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!

Re: Sally the (Somerset) Saxo
Moved on a bit now....
I painted the side where the sill repairs damaged the rear wing, lucky that most of it is under a "stone chip" line.... I then undersealed the new metal under the car after a good coating with zinc primer and a black top coat......I used Bilt & Hamber UB, nice and thick. I drilled a hole in the new metal making the box section and used B&H Dynax-S50 cavity wax in there.....
With that all done I took the car outside for a good wash, TFR all over, then snow foam and a good scrub. Jet washed all over incld door jams boot shut, wheel arches and engine bay.
The Saxo has been a "working car"....it needed a bloody good clean !

Re: Sally the (Somerset) Saxo
After a good day outside to dry the Saxo was then returned to the garage so I could let my OCD run riot !
Cleaning, compound and polishing has started !
What was niggling me was the condition of the now very grey and dull rubbing strips/mouldings......so I needed to clean that first,,,,so out with the rags, TFR and a scrubbing brush. The trouble then is that does not "re-black" So, with nothing other than Auto Glym (does not last in the rain/on the outside of a car) and some cheep "Back to Black" I looked about for a product that would "feed" the dry plastic......I think I found a rather good alternative ! Looking OK next to compounded and polished paint... .........and YES, I will be sanding, de-rusting and painting that tow hook !

Looking good Alasdair, what was the alternative?

Re: Sally the (Somerset) Saxo
Believe it or not.....this !
Battery terminal protector......spray into a paint cap till you get a big "blob" in it, use a stiff(ish) short bristle brush to scrub it on thick enough to leave "brush marks".
Leave it for an hour then wipe off then buff to a silk finish
NOTE, I have seen others that have blue/red/yellow pigments in them (such as from Euro Car Parts).....so not all Battery terminal protectors are the same.

SAXO Spare part FOR SALE.....slightly used/shows age

Every day's a school day!! Have to remember that next time I get a black bumper to deal with. It will be interesting to see how long it lasts!

Re: Sally the (Somerset) Saxo
It will....it all depends if the chemicals (no silicon) in it "feed" the plastic like the fantasticality good but expensive stuff like Gtechniq C4.

Re: Sally the (Somerset) Saxo
Loved reading this, can I get the part numbers your selling please
It's nice to see a vehicle being looked after rather than scrapped. I might have to pop round to yours to teach me how to do rust and paint repairs.

Re: Sally the (Somerset) Saxo
Excellent work Alasdair
So pleased to see Sally will live on...
She was with me for almost 7 years, never once let me down and cost me very little to run over that period. A cracker of a little car
I wonder if I will be able to say that about my 'modern crap' in seven years' time?
In my ownership, she needed one exhaust system, one set of tyres, one set of discs and pads, two cambelt/waterpumps and one crank oil seal along with a relatively small amount of petrol...
I did just over 20,000 miles in her.
