A couple of garage phrases......probably get me barred :) some part well worn 'flopping about like a prick in a shirtsleeve.' and something bright 'shining like a tanner in a sweeps arse.'
I wonder how many of our youngsters know what a tanner was or have ever seen a sweep.

I remember the Irish Sweeps being advertised on Radio Luxemburg.

A simple Word, but in the context of the location of a classic car auction this very day ( link viewtopic.php?p=771162#p771162 ), an example of one of the most tumultuous events in the development of the English language.

Enough there to bring back to the thread the explanation with a little bit of easy research for the delight and education of the assembled throng of the viewers and posters of the FCF faithful. No points on offer, the satisfaction of curiosity perked and resolved should be reward enough.

The word is

I half expected someone to say 'What the hell's a giggle pin', I know but does anyone else?

The post responder is an endangered species Gibbo. I looked it up, as I did with James' Wobble pump. Some proprietary Winch brand was what google came up with.

The "Great Vowel Shift" implied by the current naming of Send from sand, I can only presume arose no curiosity amongst the FCF faithful although I think you possibly picked it up!

Actually a motor trade word Neil, some may have seen on the older cars a drain hole in the bottom of the clutch housing, most had a split cotter pin hanging in it, that was called a giggle pin.

The giggle pin is there to keep that hole open, which is there to allow any unexpected fluid to drain out. As the giggle pin rattles with the vibration it is not possible for dirt to clog the hole up. Somebody with a sense of humour chose the name 'giggle pin' because it rattles (and it may confuse early amateur mechanics, who probably would think they were being made fun of!).

That makes me think of when I worked on the market, I was sent to get Black and White stripy hair gel...I thought it was a joke, it wasn't, it exists. One of my favourite words is Balderdash...
