I do like that Neil :) For a moment I thought you'd got it for your signal box!

This is the current state of play of the signal box, rain stopped play so we chased the sunshine and went to Berwick!

That looks vaguely familiar Neil... I like it - a lot:)

Be even better if the semaphore spectacles had the proper coloured glass in them and they illuminated at night ;)

Not exactly train buff material per se, but the Alston signal box/shed recreation/homage at Chez Falcon has pretty much entered the painting and glazing stage. It has a decent enough waterproof roof which can be enhanced as and when slates can be scrounged and accumulated, but paint and glazing ends up with a brush with the expensive world of retail.

No doubt the sheds and garages of the United Kingdom and elsewhere are filled with appropriate half filled tins of paint in the "just in case but in reality seldom used before the inevitable journey to the tip" category. Unfortunately I have used mine up all that remains are a few tins of useless indoor emulsion.

Paint becomes a little irritating, especially in the "system" approach from bare wood to finish, requiring primer/undercoat then several "top coats" of the finish texture of your choice like satin or gloss, to achieve painting perfection. All of course requiring a few different tins to be bought. Perfection is not what I'm aiming for.

The box needs at least 2 different colours. Not actually that keen on the dull colour on the eaves boards or window surrounds of the actual box. Not keen on buying dull brown, browny-red, or reddy-brown, and likely to go off piste there with either a dark blue or black. Looking again the cladding of the box is not white, more of a "beige" with the only brilliant white being the windows themselves. Take that together its three colours, so no wonder that few people go for another tin to paint signs and door Orange, a colour that doesn't appear in standard tins and no doubt needs "making up"! :-D

By the time you have racked all of that up the paint costs more than a bargain basement Micra :-D Slap dash thinking cap on required!

Currently at £10 for 750ml tins, Johnstones paint from B&M seems the cheapest around.

Considering the main purpose for your paint is protection rather than beauty I'd consider left over auto paints as well. In my stock at the moment I have left over cans half full ranging from grey primer through the rainbow to clear laquer. The obsidian black I will use eventually on the Legacy and primer and laquer will come in handy no doubt but I have a variety of citroen colours and ford colours which are unlikely to be used other than on a gash project for protection!!
Second idea is to visit bodyshops seeking leftovers, ok for painting on most surfaces, and also new builds where half used tins invarianly end up skipped!! :-D

Thanks Mick!

I have swallowed my pride without too much problem in the building material scrounging area, but extending that to half-tins of paint is maybe a bit too far. I could ask a local professional painter I know for the occasional chat, but would feel a bit awkward asking him about his half used tins of paint. :-D

For the cladding a decent shade of the "fence" paint big tubs would probably do but I don't want to compromise on the general white-ish appearance desired for the cladding, even though the actual box at Alston on my photos is off white to beige.

This sort of thing!

B&M do a better prices, but dont have the white. £11 on offer for this shade Pale Jasmine....might do!

It might be worth a browse on ebay Neil. I just did an advanced search for 'paint' specifying used only and it came up with a fair number of options: this is just an example. Certainly a lot more bargain basement than retail. :-D

This one might be useful: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/324620188620 ... ition=3000

Thanks Mick it would have to be free collection in person from Northumberland for me, but maybe e-bay will have some offers like that. For now I have been quite pleasantly surprised with the brand names like Johnstones and Cuprinol currently on offer at B&M. No online checking of stock, or click and collect and its a case of when they're gone they're gone, but I would say currently unbeatable prices.

The large B&M's with the garden centres are springing up all over, so today all being well will have one of those pleasurable scenic car trips, picnic lunch and coffee and cake to one or two B&M's as necessary. That Cuprinol Garden Shades pale jasmine is looking ever-more attractive at 2.5 litres for £11...if anywhere has it!

There's a new B&M at Prudhoe, just along from Mickley Colliery, where your bricks came from, and a very decent coffee and cake with a view can be had at the nearby Bywell Coffee barn :-D

This was what I plumped for in the bargain basement! No pale Jasmine, or Country Cream on the shelves but thought I would try the "Coastal Mist". Might turn out nice, if it doesn't easy enough to try something different and at £11 for a 2.5L tin, I am pre-primed to like it anyway. :-D

Bit of slap dash painting and we have Cuprinol Garden Shades "Coastal Mist" on the boards, and now a Dulux Satinwood "Natural Calico" former brown door providing a blank canvas for any colour....even orange but unlikely due to the extra expense of such a tin :-D I do have an full 750ml tin of Satinwood "Mineral Mist" which is a very similar colour to the Cuprinol Garden Shades "Coastal Mist", and a Brilliant white gloss or Black gloss. Brilliant white in itself provides a nice contrast with the coastal mist.

Before we set off for home we had time for a very quick look at the local railway. As it happened we timed it perfectly, parking in the shade and walking onto the platform just as The Mendip Belle arrived! :-D
