is it pointless doing oil change on a car that drinks oil

Unread post by harwoodguy »

i noticed my car after 800mile drive each time my dipstick is on low so i after keep filling it to near max level

i use 5w30

no blue smoke or any smoke from exhaust even past mot last month

what i want to know if i keep adding oil each month is it pointless doing a oil change if im adding roughly 800ml of oil each month and just change oil filter every 10,000miles

A 207 leaking that much oil needs investigation, that ain't normal

ive checked and theres no oil leak

doesnt even feel down on power

well if things get worse then i just sell it next year

as some reason ive had 3 times rev counter play up for 5min then work

another forum says 1ltr is normal for 1000mile drive on this engine that you after keep topping up this much

They all do that sir, don't worry too much about it unless it's dripping all over the drive. Both of mine did it. I had two other Peugeots with the same engine, they all do it to differing degrees. Weird design on one of the corners of the head where the head gasket can blow but the only result is oil loss.

If it is a vti engine we had a 2010 C3 with the 1.4 version and that used about 1 litre of oil per 1000 miles or so from when we had it at 12000 miles. If a TUJ engine we had a 2003 C3 1.4 and that did not use oil and it was still clean when changed. The vti also needed a new timing chain at 50k miles.
I would still do the oil changes each year, all the muck that builds up is probably still in the sump and not lost with the oil that disappears. If you could analyse the oil you might find it has degraded over the year and could also be a lot thicker. About £30 a year for an oil change with the correct Total oil is not much.
I think it is the TUJ engines that can leak oil from the head gasket at the front corner timing belt end. the rubber oil seal in that corner I think can degrade over time.

Yes, both 2007 1.4 16V 207s I owned had this exact issue, as did a 307 with the same engine that I got given.. because it was pissing oil everywhere, really badly. Used it until the 1/2 tank of petrol was out, then sold it to PTS for £250 :rofl2:

I agree with Paul. There will be a build up of crud in the sump, always good to drain it out.

I seem to recall that at least one of mine wasn't so oil-thirsty if I kept the level 1/3 the way between min and max.
