Ok looking for a 16yr old wizz kid. I have a BT fibre jobbie router, I have FTTP. and have just purchased an outside security camera that uses Wifi, the docs say it only works on 2.4 GHz. My BT router it seems works on 5ghz as standard and also works on 2.4ghz. Looking at the router settings it shows it is transmitting on 2.4 and 5, is the password the same on 2.4 and 5 to connect to other products, or is the password different on each channel. I am on the verge of returning the bloody thing as can't seem to set it up. Have tried to set it up on my iPad but it seems it is too old to work, my iPhone it seems is suitable but trying to make my way through those small screens is doing my head in. Oh for the happy days in the 60's when we didn't have these things.

It all depends on how your router is setup.

1) If your router has both separate 2.4 and 5GHz wifi bands, they may well have a separate password for each. This can be set or checked in the router management console or web interface.
2) Having said that, they can be combined into a single network, in which case it will have a single password.

The problem with 2 above is that devices which require a specific band like 2.4 GHz, can often have trouble connecting to these devices like your camera.

I always keep mine separate for this reason as many HomeKit accessories I have require the 2.4 GHz network specifically.

Thanks Marc for the explanation I can't remember how I set the router up it was over 2 years ago. Think I will just return the camera to Amazon and get a refund and think of plan "B"

The password for the router would be the same for both frequencies unless you specifically set a different password for each. The tricky bit is getting it connected to the router, best way to do that is install the app on your device and have the camera nearby. Keep everything near the router and when the app asks to sync you hit the sync button on the camera. That will make connection/pairing alot easier, then place the camera where you want it once it's sync. Just installed wireless cameras myself recently, it can be a pain.

Had similar issue with my thermostatic rad valves had to create a new SSID that just used the 2.4ghz band, luckily my router has the option for multiple SSID's

Its all boxed up and going to be collected by Royal mail 2morrow, on its way back to Amazon.
