Peugeot Boxer 2.0 - hesitation / black smoke under acceleration

Unread post by MJP »

Hi all -

I've got a 2017 Peugeot Boxer with the 2.0 Euro 6 engine - new to me, that I purchased as a non-runner and had a rebuilt engine fitted. It's now running, but has a bit of 'hesitation' when accelerating - most notably around 1800-2000rpm, and also gives off black smoke from the exhaust when accelerating or under load.

I've checked/done the following so far:
1. Scanned for error codes - nothing present
2. Programmed/coded the injectors using Diagbox (all 4 were changed along with the engine for 2nd hand eBay sourced parts)
3. Checked the fuel pressure via DiagBox. Actual pressure is about 280 bar at idle, within +/- 15 bar of reference, and seems to track ok when revved.

I have noticed one area for concern in live data, with the following correction factors:

Cyl 1: 1.023
Cyl 2: 1.057
Cyl 3: 1.166
Cyl 4: 0.751

Is it worth getting the injectors all removed and tested, based on this, or would you look at other matters first? Any troubleshooting tips to help track the source of the black smoke/hesitation would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Martin

Have you initialised the injectors after coding them. This starts the learning process, otherwise they fuel as per the previous injector. Also check all intercooler connections are tight. My guess would be the injectors leaking, if they are coded and initialised.

I think a faulty egr valve can cause black smoke so something to check.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I followed the 'Replacement of injector' in DiagBox which only prompted for the new code and then a switch off/on process. I didn't do any additional initialization. Can you share any tips on how to do it using Diagbox or another tool?

Good idea Paul. Would you just recommend removal and inspection or some other kind of test? It looks a bit of a pain to get off.

I would say though that it's not throwing any errors and the EGR Position and Commanded position seem to match pretty well when I view live data.

I can't remember where in the menu system it is but it's not where you code the injectors, maybe in replacement parts. Have done it on a 1.6 hdi & 2 x 2.0 HDI's. It made a big difference on all of them, improving idle & stopping smoke & soot.

Was there ever a solution found for this? I have the exact same issue, slight hesitation, some black smoke under load, 2000rpm is a bit weird, But all the numbers in Diagbox look fine.
