406 2.0 HDi -- Aux. Belt Replacement
Hi all,
I'm replacing the timing belt, auxiliary belt, pulleys, water pump, etc. on my 2.0 HDi 90 (with the Bosch fuel system).
I can't find what auxiliary belt I need -- they all seem to be different lengths. Can anybody tell me the part number for my VIN (which is VF3**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff])?
I also want to change the crank pulley, but can't find the part number for that. Thought it might be in the kit I've bought but it's not (Gates' timing belt kit).
Thank you!

All you need to do is put a parts request on the parts thread for part numbers:
viewtopic.php?t=69962
But here you go:
(6) Notched Timing Belt, part: 0816A9 (141 DTS)
Any other items let me know the item number from the above diagram.

Re: 406 2.0 HDi -- Aux. Belt Replacement
Thank you for such a quick reply. In my only request post so far, I had asked for a part number on the back of an older post submitted some years ago, so was unaware of the parts request -- will remember this for the future.
Just so you know, the part I bought on the back of that request solved the problem I had (new brake light switch!)

Is the auxiliary belt (or serpentine belt) I need the part number for. I have the timing belt.

It's just that with so many posts to deal with, I prioritise parts requests on that thread as I may not have time to read through individual posts elsewhere, so may not pick up on the requrest.

Absolutely makes sense, I will post on the link you shared in the future to keep it all in one place.GiveMeABreak wrote: 18 Aug 2023, 14:12 It's just that with so many posts to deal with, I prioritise parts requests on that thread as I may not have time to read through individual posts elsewhere, so may not pick up on the requrest.
If you could share a part number for the auxiliary (or serpentine) belt and the crank pulley/bolt, that would be great. I can go and buy them from Autodoc and book a day off work get to it all done.
Thanks again for all your invaluable help.

Here you go. There are 2 possibilities and this depends on whether you have the Sanden or Delphi Compressor fitted.derbyshirewhaley wrote: 18 Aug 2023, 14:11 Is the auxiliary belt (or serpentine belt) I need the part number for. I have the timing belt.
(2) Alternator Drive Belt
OEM Sanden, K6 LE 1740, part: 5750VS, £54.05
OEM Delphi K6 - LE 1750, part: 5750YG, £54.05
Cheaper POLY V for Delphi Compressor, part: 1606353980, £25.94
Cheaper Ply V for Sanden Compressor, part: 1606353880, £21.46

Re: 406 2.0 HDi -- Aux. Belt Replacement
When fitting copy parts I am always conscious that they may not have the same lifetime as one from a Citroen dealer. Whilst a dealer timing belt may be 10 years or x miles if sooner, a copy part may be less or more.

That's very true. I am using Gates' parts. I trust Gates and have used them on my cars for 15 years.

Re: 406 2.0 HDi -- Aux. Belt Replacement
These are not 'copy' parts as such Paul, as the alternatives I have listed are from Peugeot's own official parts service and they often offer genuine parts which I always supply and underneath a Peugeot approved alternative that is cheaper for vehicles older than 3 years old, so I always provide these too.
In either case they will be warrantied for the same time.
But generally, I agree for things like sensors and critical components like timing belts, I would personally always opt for genuine OEM parts.
In the case of Gates belts - you will find PSA already use them in their kits.

Thanks for the reassurance on Gates’ and all your help with making sure I get the right parts. Really, it’s been a great help to me. Looking forward to getting the job done.GiveMeABreak wrote: 18 Aug 2023, 14:41 In the case of Gates belts - you will find PSA already use them in their kits.
May I be cheeky and ask what the part number is for part 5 on your last posted diagram? I know it’s the crankshaft oil seal at the idler pulley, and I’d like to be prepared to replace it in case mine is leaking. There seem to be so many profiles for it, I want to get the right one!
After that, I’ll have everything I need ordered to do the job.

Re: 406 2.0 HDi -- Aux. Belt Replacement
Just thought I'd complete this thread by confirming that the job is now complete. I actually enjoyed doing it and by the end had replaced the following parts:
- The tensioners
- Both belts
- Water pump
- Crankshaft pulley seal
I would definitely do this job again, even though I doubt the 22-year-old 406 will still be around in another 60-odd thousand miles. Next I am going to replace the gearbox oil when I do the yearly engine oil change.
Access is a little restricted, but there is nothing making the job a pain, you just have to remove a number of parts to get to the relevant areas which just takes time and patience. Once you're there it's fairly straight forward. Using 8mm pins I was able to lock the engine timing easily before changing the belt. Few people seem to acknowledge that removing the top engine mount bracket before you remove the timing belt covers helps a lot! In guides I'd read before the job, removal of the mounting bracket was mentioned at belt replacement stage and not belt cover stage.
Problems encountered:
- One bolt holding the engine mount bracket to the car snapped. I could not remove it so I replaced the part the bolt was stuck in (Peugeot part number 9628311880)
- The timing belt cover snapped in one place, as I followed the guide and tried to remove it before taking the mount off
- Even in gear and with the brakes on, I could not undo the pully bolt without the pulley moving, so we locked the engine with the pins and then un-did the bolt.
Car runs well after the job and has covered about 40-50 miles so far with no strange sounds or behaviour!
