Good Morning All,
My 2016 Berlingo is a 100 Hp turbo Blue diesel with a 5-speed manual transmission. Two months ago 5th gear suddenly was another neutral. Removed the end cover and tightened the screw. I didn't think it would work due to the pieces of gear that were collecting in the bottom of the case. It didn't work. My mechanic changed the gearbox (at 70 years old, I gave up the heavy work). Fifth gear worked again. Shortly after the transmission change, I noticed that Cruise Control would not engage. Further testing revealed that Cruise control did indeed work, but only in 3rd and 4th gear. I reported this to my mechanic, and he assured me that there weren't any electrical connections on the transmission. Then why didn't the Cruise Control work in 5th gear, but worked fine in 3rd and 4th. I told him that there must be a switch on the transmission. Can anyone verify the existence or lack there-of of a switch on the five speed manual transmission. Thank You in advance.
Best Regards,
Jeffrey

Re: 2016 Berlingo cruise control won't work in fifth gear
The problem is very likely to be that the replacement gearbox has a different ratio for 5th gear.
The engine ECU monitors the engine RPM and road speed and checks that the ratio is correct before allowing the cruise to engage.
There is not much that you can do about that, without spending money on another gearbox or an ECU remap.
Maybe you can just change the 5th gear cog to one with the correct number of teeth?

Re: 2016 Berlingo cruise control won't work in fifth gear
Is the same gearbox used on other vehicles? If it was from a Berlingo, wouldn't it have the same ratio? Since the old gearbox has gone for scrap, is there any way to determine the original ratio? Wouldn't that be needed for a re-map? Is there an easy way to obtain a parts breakdown of the gearbox to see how many different gears were used originally? The VIN is VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff].

Re: 2016 Berlingo cruise control won't work in fifth gear
It should have:
NEW MEC GEARBOX
CP 17X71
MARKING (ETBC) ET23
Part No 16 124 442 80 which has been superceeded by RP 16 099 833 80 - seems only to have been fitted to the Berlingo / Partner:
MANUAL GEARBOX BE4/5 O AND REAR AXLE HYPOID GEARSET 17 X 71 AND DV6FE FAP DIESEL SINCE MAD 11211FV OR MANUAL GEARBOX BE4/5 O AND REAR AXLE HYPOID GEARSET 17 X 71 AND DV6FD FAP DIESEL SINCE MAD 11211FV OR SINCE MAD 11211FL
And the 5th gear is
PINION ASSEMBLY
COUPLE (54X31)
Which I would take to be 54 / 31 teeth (could be wrong)! It might be possible to re-program the ECU with the actual teeth numbers fitted so the input speed matches the output speed but you may have fitted a box with a different final drive which is giving a false reading, again might be possible to re-program.

These are the ratios for this gearbox type - you'll have to know what the markings indicate on the actual gearbox you have to identify it and as you can see there are different ratios:
"a" location of the engraving of serial and gearbox numbers.
"b" Identification label.

Re: 2016 Berlingo cruise control won't work in fifth gear
Richard W,
Were you able to obtain this information from the VIN? How can I find out if it is possible to re-map the ECU? Any recommendations of what to look for in a technician before I give them my car? Can the original transmission values be obtained from the ECU (either the actual ratios or the transmission model). Any special tools or software required? Now I have to do my homework and climb under the car. Remember I said I was 70 ;+)
Again, I am amazed at the support and depth of knowledge of this forum. Thanks.
