C5 Tailgate Problem
Hi, I am new to this forum but can anyone answer this query, C5 2010 estate electric tail gate anti pinch sensor R/H faulty, tailgate will not close either on the switch or fob. I have just been quoted over £100 + vat from our local agent!! ( just for the part! ) Is it possible to replace the electric unit with gas struts? They appear to be available cheaper than the sensor!

Re: C5 Tailgate Problem
One has got nothing to do with the other. The struts are completely different for each version of motorised / non-motorised. The electronic tailgate is a complex series of components that make the system work. It has a safety feature to prevent the tailgate closing if obstacles are trapped or the sensor detects an obstacle.
There are of course versions without the motorised tailgate and these have standard gas struts as can be seen here:
You have item 6 for the electronic version and the non powered version is item 5 - however as you can see they look slightly different size wise and how they are attached, so I can't tell you if they will simply fit. I can't say either how this will affect the vehicles systems if it expects something there that isn't.....

Marc, Thanks for the prompt reply, so my idea of a simple fix will not work it seems! are you aware of any online supplier that may have a R/H sensor at a sensible price? I had the system checked on a Lexus and it showed this sensor as faulty.

Re: C5 Tailgate Problem
If you are getting a fault code FD63 (which is what your description suggests), then it is likely that they have quoted for the right anti pinch sensor that can be seen left and right at (1) on the diagram below:
Fault code | FD63 |
After sales description of the fault code | Right-hand anti-pinch seal fault: Not characterised |
Description of the diagnostics | Detection of a resistance higher than 2 kohms (For 1 second) |
Conditions of activation of the diagnostics | The following conditions have to be met - Ignition switched on - Not in energy economy mode |
Conditions of disappearance of the fault | At least one of the following conditions must be fulfilled Resistance higher than 0 ohm and lower than 800 ohms (With detection of an obstacle) Resistance higher than 1,1 kohm and lower than 2 kohms (Without detection of an obstacle) |
Down-grade modes if fault present | Opening of the motorised boot possible Manual closing of the motorised boot possible |
Switching on of the warning lamp and/or warning message | - |
Main customer complaints likely | Motorised movement of the boot lid for closing impossible Motorised and manual opening possible |
Suspect areas | Electrical harness Right-hand anti-pinch switch Motorised boot ECU |

Re: C5 Tailgate Problem
There was a similar thread here on this - it turned out that there was a break in the wiring loom. I'm not saying this is the same issue as yours - but it may be worth a read. The harness has a control wire for the right hand anti pinch - which goes to the motorised tailgate control unit; it could be this causing the fault code.
