Hi all,
I’ve not been able to lock my Peugeot 406 for around a year now. Not a problem at home or at work, but it makes me very conscious when I am out and about! I’d like to get it fixed.
I have only ever had one working key with the car, which is the spare key. Until a year ago I used it to lock and unlock the car. It did come with a remote fob, but it’s never worked. At one point I took the circuitry out and put it inside a new fob (as the buttons had fallen off the old one) but this still doesn’t work and it won’t even start the car. So I would lock the car from the driver’s side. One day the lock stopped turning. The key simply wouldn’t turn in the lock barrel. I then started using the passenger door lock, and this has now jammed, too.
My belief is that a small metal piece at the bottom of the barrel breaks off and jams inside the lock. I have photographed the barrel from another car just to reference the barrel I am talking about.
Only two solutions I can see are to take the barrel out and remove the piece of metal, or to have the remote central locking repaired. Would the locking still work if it could not be operated manually by a key? Unsure how common a problem this is.

I did source a second hand barrel, and the broken part is within the circular piece shown at the bottom of this picture.

Re: Door Locks Jammed!
Just for completeness, I solved this issue.
I removed the door card and partially peeled away the membrane to get to the door lock. It was a bit of a pain unhooking the linkage to the handle, but once done and the handle removed (two bolts) I was able to slide the lock out. A broken piece of metal fell out the barrel. Once I re-fitted the barrel it was then able to turn in the lock and activate the central locking.

When you transferred the circuit board, did you remember to transfer the immobiliser chip as well?derbyshirewhaley wrote: 12 Jun 2023, 09:28 .... It did come with a remote fob, but it’s never worked. The circuit board was a singular piece, so if it contained the immobiliser chip that would have been transferred over, too.Sloppysod wrote: 03 Jul 2023, 10:34When you transferred the circuit board, did you remember to transfer the immobiliser chip as well?derbyshirewhaley wrote: 12 Jun 2023, 09:28 .... I don't think the fob which came with the car was original, as a very knowledgeable locksmith said the design was not correct for the car's year, plus it looked newer. I reckon it had never been coded to the car. I had tried PP2000 once, but never got far with it and Peugeot probably want a daft price for recoding (if they offer it on this car).
I'm happy knowing I've got working (manually-operated) central locking. Just need a spare key!

Not correct I am afraid, there's an anonymous looking little grey rectangle in the corner of the key, that's the transponder chip. Separate to the PCBderbyshirewhaley wrote: 03 Jul 2023, 12:13

I'll take a photo of my 406 Coupe's key, as my buttons are dropping to bits too

Oh no I never had that. The aftermarket fob housing I have (which isn't correct for my car's year) never had anything in that slot -- you can just see the empty space behind the board on the attached image.
I'm happy with the manual locking though. Just need to get a spare spare key.
